Arizona TV Station Update - October 2007

As always, questions, additions, comments and corrections welcome.

New licenses

  • K41JE Williams (KTVK Inc) has been granted a license to cover construction of its new facilities. The station has been broadcasting since May as a KASW translator.
  • K39IT-D Prescott (KSAZ License) has been granted a license to cover construction of the new LPDTV station.

Returned to air

  • K27DA Big Sandy Valley (Mohave County) is retransmitting KNXV 15 Phoenix.
  • K35EE Moccasin (Mohave County) is retransmitting KSAZ 10 Phoenix.
  • K55IY Camp Verde (Camp Verde TV Club) is again retransmitting KPHO 5 Phoenix.
  • K07SC Hildale UT (KUTV Holdings) is again retransmitting KUTV 2 Salt Lake City UT.
  • K09SU Hildale UT (Clear Channel) is again retransmitting KTVX 4 Salt Lake City UT.
  • K13SR Hildale UT (Washington County) is again retransmitting KUED 7 Salt Lake City UT.

New programming

  • Effective November 1, KAET-DT has added PBS World, which airs on subchannel DT3. The KBAQ-FM simulcast has been moved to DT4.
  • K15DX Fredonia (Western Kane County) is now retransmitting KSAZ 10 Phoenix. It had been a KTVK translator.
  • K27EJ Colorado City (Mohave County) is now retransmitting KSAZ 10 Phoenix. It is also a former KTVK translator.
  • KUEW 18 Saint George UT (University of Utah) is a full-power satellite station of KUED 7 Salt Lake City.
  • Former UPN affiliate KTUD-LP 25 Las Vegas NV is now independent.
  • K25JS-D Saint George UT (Clear Channel) is a translator of KTVX-DT Salt Lake City, airing both the ABC feed on DT1 and The Hive TV feed on DT2.
  • KVPX-LP 28 Las Vegas NV (Mako Communications) is an AlmaVision affiliate.
  • KEGS-LP 30 Las Vegas NV (Equity Media) has moved from channel 63, and is a LAT TV affiliate.
  • KNBX-CA 31 Las Vegas NV (Equity Media) is retransmitting KMCC 34 Laughlin NV, a Multimedios TV affiliate managed by Equity.
  • K42EZ Santa Clara UT (Larry H Miller Communications Corp) is a translator of KJZZ-TV 14 Salt Lake City, also owned by Miller. The station is operating on an STA, and while it's call letters do not appear in the FCC database, Miller refers to the callsign in STA extension requests.
  • KGNG-LP 47 Las Vegas NV (King Kong Broadcasting) is the Home Shopping Network affiliate for Las Vegas. I had mistakenly reported the HSN affiliate to be K46GX Henderson.

Construction permits and modifications granted

  • K08NY Holbrook (Venture Technologies) has been granted permission to change the antenna specified in its construction permit from a directional to a non-directional. The construction permit expires in March 2008.
  • K25AL Lake Havasu City (Lake Havasu Christian Television) has been granted permission to reduce the ERP in their DTV flash cut application from 1.28 kW to 6 watts. The 1.28 kW is the ERP of their analog license.

Silent stations

  • KBBA-LP 10 Lake Havasu City (Smoke and Mirrors) has gone silent. It had been airing a camera view from the tower site looking back toward the city.
  • K21EG Golden Valley (Mohave County) has once again gone silent. It had been retransmitting KPNX 12 Phoenix.
  • K30ES Globe (Globe LPTV) is silent. It had been granted a license to move its transmitter to a site near Roosevelt Lake and is supposed to cover Apache Junction as well as Globe, but just as at the old site, no signal can be received from the station.
  • K46CG Golden Valley (Mohave County) is silent. It had been retransmitting KNXV 15 Phoenix.
  • K55EH Phoenix (Londen Media Group) has gone silent due to the impending launch of Qualcomm's MediaFLO service on channel 55 in the Phoenix area. The station has a six-month STA to remain silent while Londen searches for another channel. Available channels in the Phoenix area are scarce, especially those in-core.
  • K57JO Laughlin NV (9th Island Broadcasting) is silent. It is supposed to be a translator for KMCC 34 Laughlin NV, but would duplicate KMCC's current service area, and even broadcasts from the same tower as KMCC.

Transactions

  • The FCC has approved Latin America Broadcasting's sale of K25DM Phoenix to Mako Communications.
  • Village Broadcasting Corp. has agreed to sell KVSW-LP 38 Winslow to Asset Managment Solutions, LLC. The sale is pending FCC approval.

Applications reinstated

  • The FCC has reinstated The American Legacy Foundation's application to build a full-service non-commercial television station on channel 43 in Coolidge, which would serve Pinal County and the Southeast Valley of the Phoenix area. All other applications for the allocation have been dismissed. The American Legacy Foundation is an anti-tobacco organization best known for its "Truth" and "Don't Pass Gas" ad campaigns.

Applications filed but not yet approved

  • KVFA-LP 6 Yuma (KM Communications) has applied for a license to cover construction of a new station.
  • The FCC has accepted an application from Fiberlessnet, Inc. to build an LPTV station on channel 39 serving Littlefield. The application was submitted in August 2000 during the last filing period.
  • The FCC has accepted an application from Kane County (UT) to build a digital companion channel to K05AX on channel 27. K05AX is a translator of KSL-TV 5 Salt Lake City.
  • The FCC has accepted an application from Kane County (UT) to build a digital companion channel to K07ES on channel 24. K07ES is a translator of KUED 7 Salt Lake City.
  • The FCC has accepted an application from Kane County (UT) to build a digital companion channel to K20EC on channel 25. K20EC is a translator of KUTV 2 Salt Lake City.

Digital subchannels

  • KAET-DT Phoenix broadcasts PBS Create on channel 8.2, PBS World on channel 8.3 and music from KBAQ-FM on 8.4.
  • KVBC-DT Las Vegas NV broadcasts Weather Plus on channel 3.2.
  • KTVX-DT Salt Lake City UT broadcasts The Hive TV on channel 4.2. The Hive TV is a channel with syndicated programming, independent movies, a simulcast of a local radio station and locally-produced programming. It is repeated on DTV translators of KTVX.
  • KVVU-DT Henderson NV broadcasts weather forecasts on channel 5.2.
  • KLAS-DT Las Vegas NV broadcasts LATV on channel 8.2.
  • KLVX-DT Las Vegas NV broadcasts PBS Kids on channel 10.2 and PBS Create on channel 10.3.
  • KTNV-DT Las Vegas NV broadcasts traffic reports on channel 13.2.
  • KINC-DT Las Vegas NV broadcasts Telefutura on channel 15.2. Not certain whether or not it is a simulcast of KELV-LP, or if KELV-LP is itself a straight network feed.

Missed a few:

New programming
  • Southern Greenlee County's CATV system has moved its KGUN 9 Tucson feed to K65CM Duncan (from K67CP).
  • Southern Greenlee has also moved its TNT feed to K67CP Duncan from K69DG, replacing the KGUN feed.
  • Southern Greenlee had moved its KOVT 10 Silver City NM feed to K69DG Duncan, replacing TNT. KOVT is a satellite of KOAT 7 Albuquerque, and its programming displays the KOAT bug. KOVT had been previously on K07IR York on the Southern Greenlee County CATV system.

Silent stations
  • K07IR York (Southern Greenlee County) is silent.

I believe the "American Legacy Foundation" behind this application is different than the national anti-tobacco group. The "ALF" related to this application is headed by one William Yde, former Tucson radio broadcaster and currently head of a traffic information provider with operations in Australia and Canada. I have no clue on what this organization's purpose is.

Thanks for clearing that up. I thought it was kind of odd that an anti-tobacco organization would want to build a TV station, but it was the only organization I could find with that name. It was a paper application filed in 1996, so specifics were hard to come by.

I'm not sure the station will be built anyway, as the petition for reconsideration that led to the reinstatement was filed 3 years ago. The FCC moves pretty slowly, then add the digital conversion and thousands of license renewals and it's a wonder anything gets accomplished there.
