Arizona TV Station Update

The times, they are a-changin'.

Comments, additions or corrections welcome.

New stations

KBBA-LP 10 Lake Havasu City, owned by Smoke and Mirrors LLC of Lake Havasu City, is on the air. They are running a test pattern, at least late at night.

KYUM-LP 2 Yuma, owned by Hispanic Christian Community Network (HCCN) of Mesquite TX, is also running a test pattern, again in the late evening.

I don't know if either of these stations run programming during the day.

K67HO Laughlin/Bullhead City, also owned by Smoke and Mirrors LLC, was granted a license to cover in Aug. 2005, but is still silent.

New programming

KEJR-LP 43 Phoenix, formerly KQBN-LP, is now simulcasting KMOH 6 Kingman, as predicted. Actually, it looks like KMOH is simulcasting KEJR-LP, as the KEJR-LP 43 bug appears on KMOH.

KMCC 34 Laughlin/Bullhead City no longer simulcasts KVBC 3 Las Vegas. In Oct. 2004, Mojave Broadcasting Company of Las Vegas sold the station to Cranston II LLC of Bal Harbour FL. KMCC now runs Spanish-language programming, source unknown.

In Wellton, translator K65BB has replaced KXNV with KAZT, which is odd, because co-located and KAZT-owned translator K19CX Yuma can also be seen on the Wellton side of the mountain.

Also from Wellton, K67BI has replaced KTVK with KYMA 11 Yuma (NBC), meaning that all 3 of Yuma/El Centro's English-language full-power stations are now available by translator in Wellton. (K63AV has KSWT and K69BQ has KECY - K61AX still simulcasts KAET.)

Returned to air

K16FB Globe (Telefutura) is back on the air, although with a very weak signal. On 11/29, they applied for an extension to their Remain Silent STA.

Also from Globe, K61FB (//KPNX 12) is back on.

Tucson's K57BD (//KPAZ 21) is back with a strong signal. I was wrong about them being off the air for good.

And in Yuma, K28FM is on, broadcasting Más Musica TV.

Transactions

In Flagstaff, Trinity Broadcasting of Arizona has agreed to sell translator K35FH to Jerry Marth of Oklahoma City upon approval by the FCC. The application was filed with the FCC on 12/1. I wonder what TBN's plans are, especially with the news that KNAZ may be for sale? The sale of K35FH was agreed to on 9/28, long before news about KNAZ surfaced.

The sale of KGUN 9 Tucson from Emmis to Journal Broadcast Corp has been approved by the FCC. Also included are translator K16EO Oro Valley/Tucson and silent translator K02BW Casas Adobes.

The transfer of translators K13VW Chinle and K30GL Many Farms has been approved by the FCC as part of the sale of KREZ 6 Durango from Emmis to LIN of Colorado LLC.

The transfer of silent translator K66BH Navajo Comp Station has been approved by the FCC as part of the sale of KRQE 13 Albuquerque from Emmis to LIN of New Mexico LLC.

As discussed at length in this forum, but not yet verified, KNAZ 2 Flagstaff is allegedly for sale.

Am I the only one who finds the name of the licensee amusing?

If KNAZ is sold to TBN, it'll be another local institution to have gone from general to Jesus, especially a low VHF affiliated with a big 3 network. In Philadelphia, many TV viewers still hasn't forgiven Dorothy Brunson for selling indy WGTW ch.48 to TBN.

If TBN is after KNAZ, it's for one reason only -- must-carry.

Why would TBN want KNAZ? Don't they already own KPAZ?

Maybe to expand the latter's signal into Flagstaff, perhaps?

More Updates

Returned to air

KUDF-LP 14 Tucson is finally broadcasting, airing Azteca America. The last time I saw a signal on 14, I think they were still owned by Television Apogeo de Tucson and simulcasting XEWH 6 Hermosillo SO, a.k.a. TeleMax.

KWTA-LP 31 Tucson (ACN Jewelry Televsion) is back on, but not surprisingly, they are getting plenty of interference from KUVE 46.

Or for the added digital spectrum it would afford TBN? They're putting up five separate streams from their digital stations...

Smoke and Mirrors is one of Rick Murphy's holding companies for his Mohave County stations (others are Murphy Broadcasting and Mad Dog Wireless). Murphy unsuccessfully challenged Trent Franks in last year's Republican primary for Congress in Arizona's Third District.

TBN on a VHF freq? That's a new one on me! AFAIK, TBN has always been strictly UHF! Do they have any other V's, or are Paul and Jan getting bolder?

The only full-powered TBN station on VHF is KJNP-TV Ch. 4 North Pole/Fairbanks, AK. There are also some LPTV/Translators & a couple of DTV stations on VHF but that's it.
