Arlene Violet This Afternoon

Heard her with some big panel of people discussing the war in Iraq.

Someone needs to teach her how to moderate a debate. It was just a lot of shouting with her in the middle.

Also, who are these people? I was under the impression they are regulars on the show, but it sounds like a bunch of people in a nursing home sitting around durring recreation time arguing political issues.

And then I switched to Dan Yorke.

It`s worse than the Lively Experiment.
Those people are all friends of Arlene.
Dan Yorke has become the afternoon name.
Arlene sounds so anti war. I take offense to
her anti Israel remarks.
I think her show is a mockery of talk radio.
There was a rumor going around that David Bernstien
had offered Arlene big bucks to do mornings.
Maybe one of the reasons wpro let David go.
Right now, the best local host on whjj is Helen Glover
Arlene and Howie are about the same.
Whjj is wide open for a house cleaning.
Alan.

Listening to Arlene these days saddens me. She's lost her edge in a really profound way. Arlene used to be a pit bull on local and good/bad government issues.
These days Arlene rarely if ever talks local issues beyond her weekly always negative whine session with her obnoxious know it all brother Bud.
Arlene's become all Iraq radio all the time and it's always negative.
Who wants to listen to that every day?? Not sure if this is a programming hangover from the Air America days or what but Arlene never talks local with any passion or zeal. It's a real shame how Arlene has changed because it's the local issues that made Arlene Violet a very effective and important radio host.

You guys are complaining she does nt talk about local issues. What has happened locally lately worth talking about.

Steve Laffey's cronies sitting in a van taking pictures of you speeding down Pontiac Ave. I think this guy is the next Buddy. This guy can't even go to the bathroom without having it on the news.Maybe not but you know what I mean.

Really.

Arlene Violet has been treading water for years. And, her ego far surpasses her ability.

Dan Yorke's program content is far superior with regard to local issues. I just wish someone would advise him to stop yelling in that high pitched tone.

>> Violet was energized by Air America.
When Depetro left, Violet was bending GM Corwins ear about getting Air America.
All Violet did was show her true colors. She makes Sen Caffee look like a
conservative.
When the Twin Towers fell, so did Violets pretense of being a 'moderate'.
Ever since then, she`s been UNlistenable...
Hey Arlene,
Ramsey Clark heard you want to join Saddam s defense team...

First off, Arlene being a "liberal" or "moderate" is highly debatable. I have attempted to argue that Arlene is actually quite conservative, but that is a different subject for another time. As a reminder, Arlene voted for George W. Bush in 2000, and vigorously defended Bush's efforts to stop recounts in Florida after that election.

Let us suppose, then, that Arlene has become more moderate. So what? She is entitled to believe whatever she wants to believe. Moreover, talk radio is in sore need of balance. Even with Air America, America's AM airwaves are dominant by conservatives and reactionaries such as Michael Savage. Talk radio was supposed to present an opportunity for a robust discussion of ideas. With the overwhelming majority of talk radio leaning far Right - even here in Providence - if we have some moderate or (God-forbid) liberal voices, we can at least search out our own perspective and find an overall wider discussion of the issues on the airwaves.

Again, while I cannot believe I am defending Arlene, I must do it. What is wrong with a discussion of national or even international issues, especially one that infuses a local perspective? Arlene has talked much more about the Iraq War, and by extension, the issue IS a local one. Rhode Island and Massachusetts have contributed many fine soldiers to the effort.

Additionally, how many people find interesting Dan Yorke's whines about power plays in the Rhode Island General Assembly? Or his tirades about the squabble concerning the Rhode Island Republican Party's alleged misuse of campaign funds in the 2002 election? I would love to hear Dan Yorke address Iraq, and defend his position. The unfolding of events in Iraq would have been something, I suspect, that would have angered Dan greatly.

For someone so repelled by the idea of defending Arlene Violet you certainly do a lot of it Scott.
There is nothing wrong with Arlene talking Iraq but that's all Arlene does these days. Quite a change for her considering she made a name for herself in the talk radio business by taking on local issues and politicians.
Sorry you missed Yorke's show on Iraq the other day Scott.
He challenged Hillary Clinton's poodle Sen Jack Reed so much so that Jack "had to run" after 10 minutes with Dan. What made that so very funny is how Reed gave Arlene and her soft ball questions all the time she wanted earlier that hour.
Scott, compare the ratings of these two if you'd like to know who finds what interesting in the Rhode Island market.
See if you can defend Arlene Violet's ratings.

Why? Because I do not agree with your point of view? This message board is for debate and discussion of radio issues, not for everyone to parrot one point of view. This is why I have tried to avoid these endless posts about local AM radio hosts.

Its the same old spiral.....once again....WPRO is god's most loved station, and WHJJ is cleared by the devil, then attack the hosts on WHJJ (although they are always right to trash Geoff Charles as much as they want), then attack Arlene, then wish for that loser, Depetro to come back, they they try to figure how to get second rate conservatives on WHJJ, then take a shot at the Management, take a shot at Keri, maybe take a shot at AAR, and start over again...

I may not have the exact order of events but its almost guaranteed that each event i list will be done....which is leading to the slow, painful death of this forum.

Rinse, repeat, and here we go again.....
