Armed Forces Network (AFRTS) picks up Ed Shultz

According to an Ed Shultz listener, Big Ed will be on AFN Radio starting Oct 17th. No word on how many hours. AFN bases their programming decisions on ratings and market trends according to them. AFN carries mostly right wing wackos like Dr. Laura, Rush, and Dr James Dobson (Focus On the Family) It'll be good for the military to finally hear the truth for once and not just right wing propaganda.

Well, AFRTS will now air the blandest Democrat besides Alan Colmes (I'm surprised they didn't run with his show). Al Franken would have been a more representative choice to provide a counterpoint to Rush, but you have to take what you can get I guess.

I'm surprised AFRTS airs Dobson's show. I can't imagine a lot of troops spending their time with Dr. Laura, whose ratings are dropping faster than our credibility in Iraq these days.

It's RADIO-info, by the way...

Dr. Laura is still #4 nationally, but I would agree her appeal to troops is limited. Seeing the demographic they fit into, something out of the pages of KLSX would be more fitting.

What did you expect?

I notice that what you agree with is "the truth." What you don't agree with is "right wing propaganda."

That said, as a former AFRTS broadcaster, "A Farts" is run by the brass and lifer NCO's. It reflects how they view the world. Like many people on these boards, they assume that what they like and what they agree with must be popular (and therefore ratings must be wrong). The tastes of senior career NCO's are reflected in music choices (not the tastes of people in their late teens or early 20's who make up the bulk of military personnel). AFRTS' mission is to be "The Voice of the Commander" - to build morale and "educate" the troops. Like any corporate newsletter for employees it reflects management's point of view and what management wants people to know to motivate workers and minimize any discontent.

And like most people, the people who run AFRTS, see what they agree with as the truth, and what they disagree with as propaganda (undermining the mission and giving aid and comfort to the enemy).

Besides, in an all-volunteer military filled with the kind of people disposed to enlist, "right-wing wackos" may be what they prefer to listen to.

Hey, I'm a Senior NCO and have done my time in Saudi, Iraq, Africa and around the world. I know the truth, because I have read the reports on how the troops die in Iraq. I can't get into here much, but it much worst than what has been reported thus far.

If this is indeed true, it'll be an hour. AFRTS doesn't carry more than one hour of any particular show...even Rush's clearance is an hour.
