Hi there folks. I am happy to be able to present something on this forum that is really special, and perhaps some of you radio enthusiasts may have been looking for this for quite some time. I know I have. It's Arnie Ginsburg's famous Night Train Show theme song as recorded by the local Boston group, the Three Dees back in 1957.
Now, most of you folks are familiar with this theme from Arnie's days at WMEX or from the Cruisin' '61 album on Increase Records in which this theme was also featured. However, this version of the theme always had to be edited and I always wondered why. I could tell that there were some edits in the theme and I always wondered why that was. Well, I got my answer a couple of years ago when I received my first copy of the theme directly from the 7-inch 33 RPM record that was recorded on Arnie Ginsburg's own Velvet Voice label. Incidentally, since then I've found an even better copy of the theme. When the Night Train Show theme was originally recorded, Arnie Ginsburg was working at WBOS AM, 1600 in Brookline, and there is mention of "1600 on your radio" so that's why when he moved to WMEX, the theme always had to be edited. But thankfully I have the complete theme for you folks as it was originally recorded which you can
download right here,
or
stream right here.
And as an extra added bonus, I also have something else that you've heard some of on the Cruisin' '61 album, but again, not the entire thing. Also on that record were the Three Dees along with Arnie Ginsburg himself with the Pal Mal Rock. I'm sure that most of you folks that lived in Massachusetts remember Mals discount department stores. I wonder what ever happened to that chain. They were all over southern New England. My mom always used to shop at the Mals store in Norwood. Anyway, the Pal Mal Rock was featured on the Cruisin' '61 album but the length of the song was cut. Believe it or not, this commercial for Mals was actually recorded as a full length song, and here's the entire track for you which you can
download here,
or if you prefer, you can
stream it here.
Now what I'd love to find is the R&B group the Valentine's 1955 theme for the rockin' Joe Smith show. Joe Smith also worked at WBOS back in 1955 and '56. Another thing that I'd love to find is the CRC series 8 Bruce Bradley theme that he used just before counting down the top ten songs of the evening on WBZ. I've found many of the CRC series 8 jingles for WBZ, although the versions I have don't have the finger snapping between the W and the B in the call letters, but I've never managed to find that Bruce Bradley count down theme. Does anyone possibly have this perhaps?
