Arnie Warren Passes Away

I can't believe that so little has been made of the passing of Arnie Warren on April 19 at 73. He lived in Wellington. There was a short note
in one of the daily services and a routine obit in the Sun-Sentinel online. Considering his popularity for years on WGBS and hosting "Bowling for Dollars", his passing seems to have gone largely unnoticed.

I'm out of market so I don't have a lot of details about Arnie's passing. I too was waiting to see if anything would be posted. Maybe his listeners have moved away or maybe they don't check in here.

Arnie was a real pro all the way. I'll never forget watching him do his Amos Rutlidge character. He would inturrupt himself just like a normal conversation you'd have with someone. It was obvious he studied this tecnique. I'll never forget watching this pro in action.

After my visit to Arnie at WGBS he called me at the station I was working for in Fort Lauderdale to offer me the evening shift. It was a great compliment to get that call.

Some might not realize that Arnie Warren followed his success with a stint at KMOX as a talk show host and interviewer. He won honors for his interviewing style and has written books on the subject that I plan to buy. I heard him talk about the books in line in an interview and I think they would be a help to anyone who wants to know how to conduct a good interview. Not only a great sense of humor but also a real talent and one of the nicest guys in radio.

The interview I heard of Arnie about his books was done just last month and he still sounded great!

My brother e-mailed me an obit from this morning's Sun-Sentinel. Finally, Arnie received a fitting tribute. It took me about three years before I figured out that Amos Rutledge was Arnie's alter-ego. Most South Floridians did not realize that Arnie had an acclaimed show on
KMOX in St. Louis, and he authored multiple books that were published in several languages. We've lost one of the great and accomplished
people in South Florida radio history.

Our family is deeply touched and grateful for your thoughts and memories. The response and support from Arnie's unexpected passing has given us much comfort and strength to persevere through this difficult time. For this, we offer our sincerest appreciation. Arnie's unique and creative ways enabled him to touch our lives and will endure forever in our hearts; his voice will linger in our minds.

For all of his supporters, he has remained most appreciative.
A note from Arnie, "One is fortunate in a creative life to have thoughtful, wise and dedicated friends who generously give of their talent, offer ideas and critiques, and who care....I offer my deepest thanks for their contributions."

I've been in the business 37 years now. I worked with Arnie at WGBS for a time. During that 37 years, he was one of those rare people in the business who was really really nice and always a pleasure to be around. I'll miss him.

I can't remember how many music formats he lasted through at WGBS.
To me, he was and always will be WGBS.
