Arsenio

Last I checked, he was trailing behind Leno, he's sometimes either behind Letterman as well or tying him, but he was ahead of Kimmel though.

I'm surprised by that. I suppose the old 1989-94 viewers are back watching him again. He wasn't that funny on one episode I watched - he might have warmed up more now, but I don't know for sure (rarely watch him).

To me this show comes across as a low-budget talk show. The jokes seem forced and often there is very little reaction or laughter from the audience that gives it a sense of awkwardness. My only incentive to watch is that the show starts at 11pm instead of 11:35 like the others.

In Jacksonville, Arsenio airs at 11:30 on independent WJXT...five minutes before the network shows!

The ratings have fallen off the cliff. Its true that when it launched, it was competitive, but that's no longer the case. They just fired the showrunner. Its averaging a 0.7 but that's only because of its strong start.

it may just be me but in the original run of the arsenio hall show he was a hip guy iin the way he did the show.now he reminds me of grady on sanford and son.

unfortunatly he didn`t evolve into the older version of arsenio gradually like letterman eased into an older version of himself on tv over the years.

I was personally never a fan of Arsenio, so I haven't checked out the new show. But late night is WAY too cluttered with talk shows, now. Something has to give, and my guess is - Arsenio will not be on the air for long. Most of the others - including Kimmel and Conan have at least cultivited enough of a following to last for awhile. Not so Arsenio, who for most viewers is unknown.

Consider that 30 year year olds were only 11 in 1994 when Arsenio's original show left the air, so it was probably on after their bedtime. And it's not like he's been a high profile celebrity in the intervening 19 years - he pretty much fell off the planet.

I don't know what the local late-night ratings are in my market (SF Bay Area), but I'd guess that stations who run off-network reruns are beginning to show ratings at or above some of the talk shows, given that the market is so fragmented now.

how long of a commitment are the stations giving? Will it still be on after Leno retires? how much of a budget does it have? It might be turning a profit despite low ratings

He appeared in plenty of TV programs during the past 19 years such as the recent version of "Star Search" he hosted in 2003 and 2004 (his hosting of "Star Search" came to my mind immediately after I read the message I quoted).

OK - perhaps "fell off the planet" is an overstatement, but so is "appeared in plenty of TV programs during the past 19 years." He has 7 credits on imdb since his show ended, and 2 of those were voice acting, so his face didn't appear. Imdb might have missed a few, but this means Arsenio is a very minor presence in the minds of many viewers, and not a person they'd know by name unless they remember his original show.

I think you were right in your first post. He relied on "Celebrity Apprentice" to revive his awareness, so essentially he "fell off the planet." Ricki Lake did "Dancing with the Stars" to help boost her awareness before her new show, but unfortunately it didn't help.

Anyways, I don't think it matters that much, because sometimes a show with an unknown person can become popular quickly (see Sofia Vergara). Arsenio 2.0 is likely going for the Black audience, or can differentiate itself from Leno/Letterman/Kimmel/Conan that way, atleast initially before reaching a wider audience. The original Arsenio show seemed to appeal to a wider audience.

I noticed the edition of "The Arsenio Hall Show" one of my local TV stations broadcast last night was not a new edition. I wonder why (as of this writing, Zap2it's programming guide for the station does not have the word "new" beside any of its listings for the program between today and Monday, November 4th)?

Agreed. And remember that Arsenio's show relies entirely on the appeal of Arsenio himself. Yes - Sofia Vergara became a star quickly - but she's funny and she's drop dead gorgeous. But Modern Family is an ensemble show, and would likely be popular without Sofia.

My local station is the same way, I don't know why he would be in reruns so soon, Unless they are retooling the show.

low budget probably, probably waiting until November sweeps, then maybe a couple of weeks in Dec, then probably no new episodes until 2014 if it's still on
