Art Lake

Former WJAR TV & Radio personality Art Lake passed away last night surrounded by family. Condolences to the family. A true Icon in the industry...he did everything from booth announcing, hosting jazz shows on WJAR radio and then morphed into the role of TV booth announcer and then news reader then to the weatherman we all grew up with.

Wow.... I didn't even have to open this one to know what happened. I just saw the name Art Lake in the subject and knew what it was. Just a bad feeling. This is so sad. Especially during this time of year. The guy was one of the greats and it seems just like yesterday that he was goofing around with Frank Coletta on Sunrise. RIP Art. So many in this state miss you and will continue to do so.

Well gang...I had the honor to meet up with Art Lake, John Ghiorse and a few other distinguished members of the mid-1970s WJAR-TV lineup when I was a sophomore at Bristol High School, knowing full well a career in this business was my destiny...at the time I wanted to pursue Meterology, and it was the Lake-Ghiorse factor (yep, remember the Ghiorse Factor??) which drew me into the business. Never did this professionally but have studied it over the years to the degree that my own predictions were better at WINY then the guys we paid! Art Lake is a lot like Mike Sands was in my mind, a constant friend to all, a steady presence. Having been out of the Providence influence until very recently (back in the area and living in Cranston), Art's legacy is very fresh on folks minds and just about anyone you ask who has been here for a few years had something kind to say about him. WPRI-TV did a very fitting remembrance of Art on the news Monday; having interned in '77 for Walter Cryan and Karen Adams and knowing a little about the local nature of what runs Channel 12 it was fully expected and very welcome.

What is also brought to mind: the quiet camraderie which the old guard held for the business back in those days; I've noticed it at times when we remember great people who have gone to the great beyond.

Art Lake is definitely one of the great ones, consistently doing what he loved for over 60 years. My thoughts and prayers to the family and friends...
