Art Lobo killer oldies going to KDAY

Art Laboe's Killer Oldies Return To L.A.'s Airwaves Again

We've been missing Art Laboe's silky-smooth voice and his selection of old school jams ever since the R&B radio station that hosted his show, HOT 92.3, switched formats and became a hip-hop station in February. However, you can dry up those tears as the iconic radio host has found a new L.A. radio home—at 93.5 KDAY.

KDAY's website prominently features a note on its homepage that the "Art Laboe Connection" will be on Sundays from 6 p.m. to midnight. When we contacted the station, they told us that his show would premiere on June 7. Laboe has recently been posting on Twitter that he'll be returning to L.A. radio soon.

Up until now, the closest Los Angeles station we could listen to Laboe's syndicated show—one where people oftentimes called in to make song dedications to their loved ones—was in Oxnard on Old School 95.9 FM. The 89-year-old host had been connected to HOT 92.3 and its predecessor Jammin Oldies 100.3 FM since 1997.

3. things to note here.

First 2 inland empire stations have Art Laboe on. That's a first as far as I remember.
Second: KDAY. Signal is good for the IE. But the owner has limited advertisers, how long will KDAY last is anyone's guess. He is on Sunday nights, and KDAY Streams online
Third: KQIE Signal is choppy in Rancho Cucamonga, Ontario. They carry Art weekdays 9 to Midnight. They do not stream. Not really a good deal for Art either way.

Also as far as the LA signal goes it does not cover San Fernando. A lot of listeners live in the San Fernando Valley, the LA signal is very limited, in this regard. I still don't see this as a good deal for Art, but I imagine he took what he could get.

Hopefully he will return to the Coachella Valley Jamming 99.5 tried him after KDES 98.5 dropped him but for some reason it was not very long I'm wondering if options are getting limited.

Ontario and Rancho Cucamonga are not in the Riverside / San Bernardino radio market. So the coverage of KQIE there does not really matter.

How old is this guy and when do you think he will retire? I wonder if he has a controlling wife like the late Kasey Kasem?

Art will be 90 this summer, looks 70, sounds 60 and enjoys what he does. He or God will decide when it's time to quit.

I've met Art and am pleased to note that (1) he doesn't look anywhere close to his age; (2) is an incredibly nice man; and (3) makes a point of having one of his assistants fire off an e-mail when he meets someone in the industry for the first time expressing his pleasure at the meeting. (Art doesn't do any e-mail himself, his assistants advise, but he does read them and indicate the response he wants sent.)

He's a Los Angeles legend and I'm sad that he's ended up on a less-than-adequate signal now (for example, no reception in the San Fernando Valley and hit-or-miss in Orange County).

Art is pretty sharp, too. When Arbitron rolled out the PPM, they had a seminar for programmers. There, in the front row, taking notes, was Art.

If anyone wonders why "that old guy" is so successful over so many years, it's because he keeps up with everything.

He may play lots of old song, but those songs are the right ones for today. And the way he constructs his show is correct for both the diary and the PPM.

My admiration for this radio star!

Why does he do all those song dedications for the prison inmates? What's up with that? It seems to me he is catering to the criminal class for an audience. I wish he would stop that.

You don't like it, you don't have to listen.

A: Read the quote. B: Read the source's "handle." C: What did you expect?

Gee, I always viewed it as he was providing comfort for the women and children left behind by the guys in jail...

KM - I've defended you and David against attackers, now I feel I must also go the other way.

Expressing one's opinion even if I disagree with them (personally I feel Art Laboe has a sufficient history to run his program as he chooses for his audience) doesn't make the giver of the opposing view a "troll." I share your view on the merits of Art's contribution to radio, but let's avoid name-calling.

Thank you.

Art, you inspired me to go back and look at Mr. TeaParty's posting history. It included:

1. Asking if it was okay to "out" a gay broadcaster who apparently was hypocritical by denouncing homosexuality on the air but frequenting a gay bar when off the air.

2. Calling one of KFI's weekend hosts a "snake oil salesman".

3. Expressing concern about John and Ken having to apologize to a "black Lesbian" about something long since forgotten by everyone except him.

4. Calling John Zeigler the only host KFI ever had who told the truth and calling for his return.

If he himself is not a troll, he is at least engaging in the fine art of trolling. I judge him on what he has posted, but appreciate that you choose to disagree and will defend your right to do so.
