Art Mobley Is Back

Considering that its a rimshot, it'll be interesting to see how the new station plans to cover the metro from the northwestern part of the area.

I would think they'd need a South Mountain translator. The African-American population in the NW valley is barely above zero. They'd need to put a decent signal into SE Phoenix, eastern Ahwatukee, and maybe Tempe & Mesa.

Back when I was at KISP/KISO, our hottest zip codes were around the state capitol and the neighborhood around the transmitter site on Buckeye Road.

That was a long time ago, though. Those were also the two places where the station could be heard reliably at night, which would have been a significant factor in their importance.

Cumulus still syndicates The Touch, and Joyner is available in the market so they could run the station on the cheap and still sound pretty good. The question is where will they put the tower?

The 2010 census shows the 85042 (SE Phoenix, Southern to the mountain and Central to 48th St) and 85044 (eastern Ahwatukee) zip codes as 17% and 8% Black, respectively. The census tracts in the 48th/Warner area in 85044 are 15-25% Black, as is the 48th/Baseline area in 85042. I would think that this area would be a target for an urban-programmed station, but it can't be done from Wickenburg, 60+ miles away.

I like the touch format, but I'd really like to see
Art Mobley have a community format similar to KDEE - LP inSacramento or
Power88.1 KCEP in Las Vegas. The local format I
is better than Touch.

That's all well and good, but if you're a small operation you want to sign on with as few people on the payroll as possible. Either you run jockless or you run syndication, at least until you've been running for a few years and have some cashflow. The alternative is not being able to meet payroll and losing the radio station.

I would be ok with mostly syndicated fare to grab some attention with a good Urban AC format. Lots to choose from the syndication front. I do enjoy the Rickey Smiley morning show and possibly would get Doug Banks for pm drive and Keith Sweat Hotel for nights.

Joyner in the morning and Banks in the afternoon was a disaster for KMJK in 1996! I don't think Mobley would make the same mistake twice.

I'm sure he'll know not to run a new station with local airshifts 24/7 like Majik in '93, when he ran out of money and had to rely on Syncom to fund the station for the next seven years.

The difference is today, hard drives are cheap. Back then, even the big stations found computer playout systems too expensive. It was cutting edge stuff!

In 1993, most stations still played carts. The original computer than ran Kiss 1230 cost $20,000 and had two 20 MB drives. You couldn't afford enough hard drive space to play a music library - the KYOT automation system of 1995 used CD jukeboxes.

Today? Sheesh, my iPhone has more storage than the entire audio server that Sundance used in the mid 90's.

I think Phoenix may do better with Michael Baisden afternoons or Steve Harvey mornings. However, I love local shows because it helps you to feel more connected to the station.

Baisden recently left or was forced to leave his show so I agree I would put him on but no can do with no show ;-)
