Article About WKVE

Says station owner Bob Stevens of the station's playlist: "People are bored with hearing the time-tested 300-400 songs that research well. We are an AOR station; our specialty is album cuts. I'll go three or four songs deep on an album, more if it's warranted... My choices are based on gut instinct, but it's gut instinct that research should confirm."

He also admits: "We're a music station... we will never be the station that has a morning show with 50 minutes of talk and one or two songs."

Them's fightin' words!

I'd almost like to move back up north just to be able to listen to this station.

Since when is Space Truckin' not a song that everyone on earth knows (I assume that's what makes it a "first tier song")?

Also liked the shout out re Dan Fogelberg. He's been relegated to Manilow status by a lot of people and it's TOTALLY unwarranted. KVE is doing their best to wake people up about that which is awesome. :)

I agree totally regarding Dan Fogelberg. Before he went Barry Manilow on us with songs like "Longer" he was doing some interesting folk rock. Listen to his early releases like "Souvenirs", "Captured Angel" and "Netherlands" and you'll find some great songs that range from the beautiful "There's a Place in the World for a Gambler" to the bitter kick butt rocker "Someone's Been Telling You Stories" featuring the great Joe Walsh on electric guitars. I hope KVE can introduce many people to the fact that there was much more to Mr. Fogelberg than "Longer".

Welcome to FM Bob. I remember when you called me back on my cell and told me about the station 2 years ago after we'd been talking about the Quicksilver Messenger Service concert I was heading off to. I'd almost given up hope that it was going to become a reality. I am so happy for you dude.

It's about time someone take on DVE. It has comletely lost touch with it's base of music lovers. DVE used to be cool. A station that played progressive/psychedelic/hard rock and had an agenda that scared the jocks, the squares and the parents. It played dangerous music from groups with a subversive agenda. Today, it has nothing for anyone who is really into music from rock's most creative period '65 through '70-something. Today, the dove of peace features more infantile comedy and provincial sports talk than music. It's been completely corporatized, sanitized and dumbed down. There is nothing edgy left. WDVE is a travesty.

As for KVE, I find that it is the first time in a long time that I've been turned on by a music station. I don't know what to expect him to play next. I hope that Bob Stevens AKA Caleb Michaels/Captain Showbiz spends time in front of the mike. He has one of the great radio voices and what a personality. Part AM KQV jock and part free form. I remember many a night listening to his Radio Free Pittsburgh shows on KHB a few years back. Bob's a great guy and I am so excited to have him programming a station that plays real rock in the area.

I hope he expands the playlist to include more deep cuts from acts like Trower, Heep, ZZ, Purple, Grand Funk, Floyd (obscure & solo), Airplane, CSN, Neil Young, Frank Marino, Allmann's, Doors, etc . How about some psych cuts like Too Much To Dream, White Bird, Tie Dyed Princess, What About Me?, DOA etc. BTW - I dig Dan Fogelberg too.

I usually never stray from AC or Country, but I like KVE a whole lot just because of the music selection. I put it as a preset on my rental last trip to Pittsburgh and the signal was good in Point Breeze and totally clear out Route 28.

Now it's profitable. Guess which one CC cares about?

But it was also profitable when it was cool. Cool and profitable are not mutually exclusive.

Yep. DVE now is the equivalent of a piece of clothing that was really hot and trendy when you bought it, now it's worn in and comfortable, to the point that it's got food stains that never come out and and is so stretched out that it's no longer flattering.

You've just described the standard wardrobe of the average 'DVE listener. Come to think of it, that also describes my ex-wife, who was a major 'DVE fan when I knew her.

I thought I would note in passing that our own Michael J. Daniels is on WPGB (104.7) tonight, guest hosting the Pirates "Extra Innings" post-game show.
