Well, actually they did a two-part comparison. One was with repeating programs from the prior summer and the other was new programs this summer.

Given that most of the new programs closely resemble already existing ones it isn't a stretch to think that a significant number of viewers might skip them (which is evidently what is happening).

The Spanish-language network Univision, thanks to a combination of the ratings decline of the major English-language broadcast networks and the rapid growth of the Hispanic population, has ranked first among adults between 18 and 34 on quite a few nights so far this Summer and has often ranked second in the 18-49 demo on many nights as well.

According to Nielsen numbers published on TV By The Numbers.com, Univision thus far this week (July 16th-19th) won Wednesday (July 18th) and last night (July 19th) in the 18-34 demo and was second on Monday and Tuesday (July 16th-17th) in that demographic.

In the 18-49's, Univision was third Monday and Tuesday, and second (or tied for second) Wednesday and last night.

Univision's success, especially among young-adult demographics (the Hispanic population is also much younger than the entire U.S. population as a whole) has to be the TV story of the Summer thus far.

Even though NBC will get a big boost from the Olympics, Univision may well finish the Summer number-one in prime-time among 18-34's and very strong in 18-49's as well.

But wouldn't those rankings need an asterisk to denote those demo's are only among the Spanish speaking and not the demo at large?
