Michael Klein Visits Radio Racket:
'Radio Racket'

It stands to reason that the best place to discuss the radio industry these days is on the Internet. For several months, several Philly-area radio veterans have been talking shop every Friday night on The Radio Racket, a call-in Webcast that starts at 10 p.m. and runs way past 2 a.m. Saturdays at Audio18.com. The show is rerun all weekend.

Much of the Racket is a freewheeling digestion of radio news - rumors of format changes and such - punched up by topical guests, including Hy Lit, Mike Missanelli and Rollye James.

Last week, I visited the Racket's suburban studio under the condition I not disclose the location. "Too many crazies," said George Brusstar, the show host and the only one of the three regulars who uses his real name. "Roscoe Browning" and "Kyle DeWitt" use pseudonyms because they don't want their employers to know; they work in an ancillary business after toiling for years in radio.

Why do this? "I've been asking that myself," said Brusstar.

"For fun," Browning said. "This keeps me from getting back into radio."

Roscoe is leaving in a few weeks to become an air traffic controller. One more reason to avoid flying. He will be on the radio - on the aviation band. Remember to say "niner," Roscoe.

Can I be blunt for a minute??? I'm really tired of hearing about this show... and all the in fighting it brings.

I mean if I had a personal podcast and I mentioned Philly radio every now and then would any one really want me to devote as much attention to it as these guys do?

Ha! "Maintain visual seperation" will be another favorite when I need to use the restroom. ;D

Hey Hack -
Our show is pretty much exclusively about radio, and more importantly, radio in this town. I think that's a topic most people around here are interested in.
I understand your comments about the "in fighting", and wish it wasn't an issue. Unfortunately, someone who left the show on his own can't seem to let it go.
I hope you get a chance to check out the show sometime and maybe it'll change your mind.
Enjoy the format flips today!

Hack,

I do appreciate your being frank and candid about this. But much like the people who complain endlessly about Julius, I have to ask why you even bothered clicking on a thread specifically titled "Articles On Radio Racket" if you were so sick of hearing about the program.

As for your comment about the show "bringing infighting", please know the program itself is doing no such thing. For whatever reason, one person is, that's all. There is no "infighting". We discuss broadcasting (nationally, though with a thick Philly flavor), and try to have some fun while at it.

I mean if I had a personal podcast and I mentioned Philly radio every now and then would any one really want me to devote as much attention to it as these guys do?

First of all, the audio show isn't a podcast. (In fact, one of the biggest complaints I've been hearing is that we DON'T podcast.) If you've ever heard the show, then no doubt you're aware we do a bit more than "mention Philly radio every now and then".

Secondly, if your "personal podcast" talked shop for five hours a week and had interviews with greats like Hy Lit, Rollye James, Mike Missanelli, Jody Mac, Brian Carter, et cetera, then yes, I'd certainly like to know about (and help promote in any way I could) your efforts.

I recognize the folks here at Radio-Info have been kind enough to allow us to promote the program on an almost weekly basis. For that, I am much appreciative. So much so that Kyle, Roscoe, and I have been making extra attempts of late to contribute to the conversations here so we're not perceived simply as "hit-and-run spammers" who show up at Radio-Info only to plug our program.

I echo what Kyle said about checking out the program, and I hope you'll even consider calling-in sometime to talk about the business. There certainly won't be any shortage of topics this week.

Respectfully,
