Michael Klein Visits Radio Racket:
Roscoe is leaving in a few weeks to become an air traffic controller. One more reason to avoid flying. He will be on the radio - on the aviation band. Remember to say "niner," Roscoe.
'Radio Racket'
It stands to reason that the best place to discuss the radio industry these days is on the Internet. For several months, several Philly-area radio veterans have been talking shop every Friday night on The Radio Racket, a call-in Webcast that starts at 10 p.m. and runs way past 2 a.m. Saturdays at Audio18.com. The show is rerun all weekend.
Much of the Racket is a freewheeling digestion of radio news - rumors of format changes and such - punched up by topical guests, including Hy Lit, Mike Missanelli and Rollye James.
Last week, I visited the Racket's suburban studio under the condition I not disclose the location. "Too many crazies," said George Brusstar, the show host and the only one of the three regulars who uses his real name. "Roscoe Browning" and "Kyle DeWitt" use pseudonyms because they don't want their employers to know; they work in an ancillary business after toiling for years in radio.
Why do this? "I've been asking that myself," said Brusstar.
"For fun," Browning said. "This keeps me from getting back into radio."
