A's flagship to be KIFR next year

link: http://oakland.athletics.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20061030&c ontent_id=1727955&vkey=pr_oak&fext=.jsp&c_id=oak

I don't know how surprising it is, considering the low ratings on KIFR, but it is indeed rare (but becoming increasing less such) that major sports teams have their flagship on FM. CBS even keeps the flagship in company, shifting from KYCY to KIFR... I don't know how big a deal it is, to the A's (listener-wise) or to CBS, because it seems like the CBS stations will just be splitting ratings that previously went to KYCY, and A's radio isn't that big a draw anyways.

Seems like a good fit. A team nobody cares about and a station nobody listens to.

What the press release did not say was the status of KNTS 1220 Palo Alto and KVON 1440 Napa and their A's affiliation.

It sounds like CBS did not want to share affilations anymore. So is the time on KFIR worth so little that they are giving away over 180 games? Or have the A's realized that the radio coverage is worth enough to take out their checkbook and compensate CBS for two stations?

The way it sounded on KYCY this past season is that the A's own the station. The broadcasts are sometime just too long. One Saturday with extra innings and inside baseball the broadcast was seven hours! That's just too long if you are not making direct money from it.

Because these two stations are not making it on their own then this could be a good suplement to their sucessful programing.

I do sometimes enjoy the I-pod music on KYCY, it's great to be able to run a station and not have to make money. Does anyone have any recall of any regular advertisers on KFIR?

The A's certainly don't have the fan base that the Giants have, but saying nobody cares about them is a gross understatement. If you ever attended an A's game, there are a lot of loyal fans, and their rate of success getting to the post-season will only improve that.

This is a great fit for both Free-FM, as it will introduce their product to an audience which may not be very aware of them.

It's fine to be a fan, but the reality of the situation is that the team doesn't have a big enough audience to fill their own stadium and the numbers of people who tune into any radio station to hear the games isn't significant enough to give a radio station ratings. Unless of course, you are Free FM. Then you'll take whatever you can get.

You have to be an A's fan, because we all know the stadium only sells out on Dollar Hot Dog Night and when the Yankees come to town. Not to mention Interleague. I have been to plenty A's games because I enjoy the game.....and I could count the loyal A's fans in attendance on my fingers. That doesn't multiply to much on Radio listeners

The A's and CBS Radio bay area need to promote the team's radio broadcasts and let everyone know about it.
