When did WFNC move to 940? According to various sources on the www, they were on 1450 in the 1940's and 1390 by 1951. The station signed on in 1940, a year before NARBA, so I'm guessing they were on 1420 at sign-on. The 1450 dial position is now occupied by WCIE in Spring Lake.
WFNC moved to their current xmtr/studio site in early 50s from 1450 to 1390 w/ 5k day and 1k night. The move to 940 came in 1962. The power increase to 50kw was 10 years later in '72. The ORIGINAL WFNC transmitter site was on Water St near the Cape Fear River, a site which later was used by station WIDU for many years.
WFNC has been 10kw day / 1kw night (non directional) since they moved to 640 in the mid 80s. Prior to that it was 50 kw day (Non Directional) and 1 kw night on 940 with a pattern designed to protect a station in Canada - the null was so tight you could not hear WFNC at night on Fort Bragg.
