As painful as it is for me to say this:

Must give thumbs up to KKRW. Last night when I made a run for food a little after midnight, I heard something that was out of the ordinary on The Arrow. Not only was it an 80s Genesis track, but an album track from the 1986 LP, "Invisible Touch" entitled "Domino." Not exactly a radio friendly song as it clocks in at nearly ten minutes. After the song was over, there was a few seconds of silence followed by "Throwing It All Away," the next track on the album. Then it hit me: The Arrow has a midnight classic album show! I went online to confirm this. After browsing and clicking all the awful W&J stuff they have plastered all over the home page and saw a list of albums they play nightly. Typical classic rock artists: The Beatles, Tom Petty, ect. Nonetheless, it's nice to see them do this as it reminds me of their sister station, KZEP in San Antonio, that has been doing that for years.

Colonel St. James was doing that back in the 1970s on FM-100 KILT when it was an AOR station. KILT played an album every night at midnight.

I'd heard that the anti-piracy laws don't allow the playing of an album all the way through anymore. Back in the 80's and before, the midnight album hour was common, and many AOR stations had the "7th Day" on Sunday nights, playing 7 albums back to back.

You're probably thinking of the "Performance Compliment" portion of the DMCA, which prohibits more than a certain amount of songs from the same album or box set in-a-row. That, however, no longer applies to radio stations who are members of the NAB and paying streaming royalty rates negotiated as part of the NAB's settlement with SoundExchange.

The restriction on internet streaming where artists/song repetition and such can be written in the contract, nothing of the sort can be required for radio broadcast stations even if they do stream. That fight was fought years ago and if I recall correctly the 'freedom oof speech' issue and 'control of the airwaves by an unauthorized entity' came up. In other words, they cannot restrict whata radio station can or cannot do, even online. Collecting music licensing rights and fees through SoundExchange is their right but they cannot restrict a broadcast station's content. If the SoundExchange had won, stations that did 'Two for Tuesday' and such would be in violation..

I may not have made clear that the "Performance Compliment" only applied to streaming. It never applied to any over-the-air signal.

I remember about 10 years ago that there was plenty of debate as to whether or not the labels could restrict our scheduling if all we were doing was streaming a terrestrial signal. Our streaming provider's legal department requested we not schedule any rotation that would violate the performance compliment. It was specifically a part of our contract. The contract basically said they'd cut our streams if we violated it, and we'd be on the hook for any legal liabilities either they or us incurred.

We didn't question it too heavily as the performance compliment prohibited something like "more than three" songs from the same artist or box set within a three hour period. We only had one station that did blocks of songs, and it only did two or three from the same artists in-a-row, both of which were unquestionably permissible. However, it doesn't matter anymore to most broadcasters as they agreed to the NAB's settlement with SoundExchange. So, there's no substantial risk of them getting sued for copyright violations so long as they pay their fees and report in a timely manner.

I remember the good old days in South Texas when C-101 did the same thing

Which this reminds me when 93.7 was KRLY "Love 94", they also did a nightly feature of "Midnight LP", and on Sunday nights,IIRC, they did six of them back to back....interesting times!

As much as the Arrow is a shadow of what it was even as little as 10 years ago, I am surprised the Classic CD at Midnight has survived. I still listen to it every so often up here in Ohio if I remember. I used to listen to it religiously, and it introduced me to a lot of music I'd never heard.

Thanks. As painful as it was for subby to post this, it was even more painful to read how quickly a staple feature that got a lot of love from some of its hosts (ahem) was forgotten. Shmave, you're a peach!
