As Predicted Winter Book is Out and Smooth Jazz is a FLOP in the ratings. There is a reason markets all acros the country have dropped the format
 
Markets all over the country haven't dropped smooth jazz because it gets low ratings. The format's been getting dropped because it skews too old. Steve Hibbard's been around and knows what he's doing. If the programming's poor, it would probably be because Hibbard hasn't been given enough to work with.

It's really on-par with the rest of Vanguard's holdings. It's in a statistical tie with KRKE, and KIVA doesn't appear to show up at all.
 
The Smooth Jazz Station Sounds Great but there is Not the Audience Size to make it work in Albuquerque besides when I was there many Advertisers gave it a try but got no response to their ads. Hibbard Knows His Stuff just that the market is NOT there for it and Then DON destroyed KRKE by saying I want to focus on Smooth Jazz and Fire the KRKE Staff and be a Juke Box Like Ed-FM problem is that format does NOT lend its self to an Ed Type format
 
I can't speak to the Jazz station, but beside the unfortunate gloating, is it possible that a change in frequency (107.5 to 94.5) and dropping the older music (50's & 60's) might have caused the lower rating? There are some complaints on the Kool 94.5 Facebook page about dropping the older music so they have lost those listeners.
Wouldn't it take some time for them to gather new listeners who like the new format? (70's & 80's)
How Long? It's not as drastic a change as switching from Oldies to Hip Hop, but 94.5 is not the same station that 107.5 was.
 
call me crazy,but..1955-1979 is a good mix, 1980-2005 is a good mix.....70's and 80's the more I listen, the more it just doesn't seem to fit. I believe 8/1/1981 ushered in a phenom that just outdated the 70's by 20 years rather than just the actual chronological couple of years. MTV changed the landscape forever, the MTV era restarted the clock at zero on 8/1/1981, except for the VJ's, damn, Nina blackwood did not age gracefully. Maybe the first video televised on MTV was more prophetic than they anticipated..The Buggles "Video killed the Radio Star",,except for Bobby Box he is still going and going and going.
 
The Frequency change was late in the Book and Did Not have too much effect in my opinion cept to say it should not have been done inside the Book....98.5 already covers what they ared oing and They have persnalities and contesting that help make the station worg 94.5 threw all that a way
 
They changed frequency on Valentines day. I remember because they were giving away great prizes, but the phones were busy every time I called to win. The Winter ratings are from January to March so that would put their change right in the middle. No doubt the frequency change made some difference. I have heard that 98.5 had a big drop too. Maybe somebody who sees the whole Arbitron can confirm this. If this is true and both 98.5 and 94.5 dropped more than a point, where did everybody go? Is this one of those weird books that Albuquerque gets sometimes or has the interest in Classic hits faded? I guess we will find out in the Spring book. It's always fun to speculate and root for our favorite stations to do well.
