Asia FM back on 89.3?

Why is Asia FM (W206BL) back on 89.3 FM ruining my reception of WNUR? I thought they were supposed to be on 89.1 FM. Noted this morning with distorted signal driving on Rt. 53.

I noticed that too. I have no idea why the translator moved from 89.1 to 89.3 because the FCC website indicates that the frequency is still at 89.1 FM. Is the FCC website not correct? Or is the station transmitting on the wrong frequency?

Whatever the case, I am glad about the change because now I can hear WONC again.

Another thing, why do these Indian / Pakistani broadcasters refer to themselves as 'Asian' or 'South Asian'? Asia is huge. The continent has 53 countries, end even more languages, but the Indians and Pakistanis wants us to believe that they represent the entire continent!

If that is true, it should be brought to the attention of the station. I don't see why an FCC licensee should be allowed to dial up whatever frequency they want while the Commission hands out $10K NAL's to backyard broadcasters.

Can anyone out that way confirm that this is still going on? Thanks.

It's still going on. I have first noticed them back on 89.3 five days ago. I have been checking every day since then while I drive to work on Rt. 53. They do fade out around Rt. 53 and Palatine Rd, with WNUR taking over the frequency.

Wow, they DO have issues! When there's a problem, I always contact the station first to see if there's a willingness to address it. Usually, that brings results. That is how I would like to be treated. OTOH, it looks like this group is totally irresponsible-- let the cards fall where they may! I was particularly interested in this case because I am a former CE of WNUR...

P.S. I did file a formal complaint online 6/12 with the FCC regarding W206BL. I will keep all of you updated on any responses I get from the FCC.

Today I actually heard a full blown ID during their broadcast listing all their stations.

They actually IDed W206BL as broadcasting on 89.3 Mt. Prospect and W207BI on 89.1 University Park. According to the FCC database W206BL should be on 89.1 FM and W207BI on 89.3 FM.

Who switched my transmitters? ;D

Is Asia FM from Mount Prospect still on 89.3?

BTW I got a form e-message from the FCC stating that the broadcaster must initiate a complaint. Good luck being that there is no readily available contact info. for Asia FM.

I checked today and there was an open carrier, but no programming.

I think WNUR needs to initiate the complaint.

Someone needs to let WNUR know that their reception is being interfered with. I don't live anywhere near the translator which got bumped from 89.1 to 89.3 in Mt. Prospect, so it's not interfering with my reception of WNUR. email: [email protected] or [email protected]

Hi everyone. I am the Assistant Chief Operator for WNUR. I appreciate the information and notification of the interference with our broadcast area. I have made a formal written complaint to the FCC and mailed it today. Unfortunately, the FCC requires interference complaints be made in writing, so there is not much I can do to accelerate that aspect. However, we have been in contact with Best Media and made them aware that they are indeed broadcasting on our channel, and need to fix this issue immediately. Time will tell how quickly this will resolve, but as of last night, we are still being blocked out in the north 'burbs (Glencoe and Winnetka minimally). In the meantime, we are still simulcasting on the internet stream so you can still listen if you are in the affected broadcast region.

Since yesterday I am hearing Asia FM from Mt. Prospect back on 89.1 FM, the frequency they are licensed for by FCC. Finally I am able to listen to the jazz music that WNUR broadcasts in the morning.

FWIW, their south side transmitter on 89.3 is horribly overmodulated, and interferes with WBEW 89.5 Chesterton and WLPR 89.1 Lowell.

South side transmitter for WNUR? We only have one transmitter that is in Evanston. I believe it is King College that is on 89.3 on the south side at a very lower power level. We can get it up here when we are not on the air.

And I can no longer receive WONC at 89.1, which is a much better college station IMO than WNUR.

He was referring to the translator for Asia FM in the south suburbs, which is at 89.3, W207BI University Park, Illinois.

I like listening to both WONC and WNUR. It's a shame that Asia FM now limits my reception of WONC, but I am glad I can get WNUR again.
