Astros Fire Announcers

Today’s topic, of course, is the Astros’ decision not to retain radio announcers Brett Dolan and Dave Raymond for the 2013 season.

"Let’s begin with Milo Hamilton’s reaction. Hamilton, as you may have noted, had no immediate reaction to Dolan’s and Raymond’s departure. When I called him last night, it was the first he had heard of the news, and he was not prepared to comment while in a social setting. We did, however, talk today."

Seems the Astros have really been cleaning house these days. I hear even the janitors are being replaced in an effort to improve the team.

The Astros need to be cleaning house, as the team has become a total embarrassment, though no fault of the radio announcers. Tens of thousands of empty seats at MMP will attest to that.

At least we are past the idiotic mentality long held by Astros fans that April though August don't matter because "the team always has a big late-season comeback."

And we've also finally got past "bring back Gene Elston" for the radio broadcasts as it has sunk in that Elston is now 90 and not an option. And, oh, yeah, Loel Passe died 15 years ago.

I'm hoping the team won't go the nostalgia route, as it would probably result in long-term mediocrity, a la the Chicago Cubs.

I, for one, am glad that Milo has finally retired. Good riddance! His ego was as big as Minute Maid Park. During his final years, he was really a parody of himself. Like a bad SNL sketch. I have never forgotten his part in the ultimate booting of Gene Elston. Milo's ego was too big to work next to Elston. Milo's ego was too big for Chicago. That's why he was shoved aside with the Cubs and sent packing. Back to the Astros, story has it he did not get along with Jerry Trupiano either who went on to several other ball clubs.

Regarding Raymond and Dolan. I always kind of considered them as placeholders until Milo's retirement. They did a good job working within the system and kind of babysitting the aging Milo. I am not surprised their contracts weren't renewed.

I wonder what big names out there are available? Any thoughts??

All three needed to be let go years ago, but as part of Drayton McLane's parade of mediocrity were kept on longer.

My vote as a listener would be for Ashby and Dierker. Good to hear they may be considered.
