Astros moving to KBME

Astros marketing for their 2013 radio / tv coverage -

Hear no evil, see no evil

Yeah, if you want your team to fall off of the face of the earth so we won't see how terrible you are, I can't think of a better combination than late night games on an AM station that's tough to tune in and TV on a network that nobody subscribes to.

Is there a gentleman's agreement in place between the Astros and Rangers regarding an Astros affiliate in the DFW?

In 2003, the Astros had KFXR 1190AM in Dallas as an affiliate. I haven't seen an affiliate of the Astros Radio Network there since. Of course, the Astros have KBBW 1010AM out of Waco, which can be heard all the way to the Oklahoma state line during daytime operations. For DFW listeners, this means they can listen to the 'Stros until around 8:30pm during the summer months until KBBW cuts its power.

I'd like to know this myself. The Cowboys and Texans have publicly acknowledged their gentleman's agreement on keeping radio out of the other's primary market.

Speaking of the 'Stros, does anyone know why today's spring training game isn't being aired on KBME? I thought they were supposed to air all the spring training games.

The game aired on delay at 7pm. I believe the same thing has been done for a few other games.

Did we ever get a "true statement" as to why CC dropped the Astros from KTRH?

There was a lot of speculation, but never any real clarification.

What do you expect them to say that they haven't said already?

CC Houston never gave a reason as to why they moved the Astros down the dial.

This is purely speculation, but I believe the move wasn't because the Astros were hurting ratings, because I guarantee the Astros would get better ratings than the Mark Levin Show. I believe it was to boost KBME's ratings, a station that is third amongst the Houston sports stations.

Clear Channel, for obvious reasons, would never publicly state what you're about to read, so allow me. Has any thought been given to the fact that the Astros could very well eclipse the dubious record of the woeful NY Mets which is 120 losses in a single season? I mean folks, let's get real for a minute. They won 7 games in the span of 50 at one point last year, and that was as a part of the NL Central. Total losses for last year? 106. The AL West is a much more difficult division these days with the Rangers, Angels, and Atheletics. Even the Mariners could be a player towards the home stretch. We don't have the Cubbies around to make us look better than we actually are anymore. So, yeah, I can understand why Clear Channel would want them off the big rig. I'd have moved them down to KBME a couple of years ago when they lost 107 games and MacLane was in fire sale mode.

You think a team that lost a total of 213 games over the last two seasons doesn't drag down ratings? ;D

I'm still not convinced that baseball is the radio draw that many think it is, though the Comcast SportsNet Houston impasse with various providers might boost listenership somewhat.

Until CC comes out and says something, we'll never know.

The Astros have had several terrible seasons from 99-12, but CC stuck with them.

The Astros are what Houston is best known for, and the listenership that KTRH gains with them is better than what Mark Levine would bring in.

I think CC is trying to salvage KBME.

I was driving back from the Astros' dominant 8-2 win over the Rangers Sunday night, and was listening to the post game show on KBME heading west on I-10, and, to my dismay, the signal faded in Katy. I had no idea the nighttime signal was THAT weak.

When you head east, where does the nighttime signal fade? Does it at least make it to Pasadena?

How about to the north? Does it at least make it to Spring?

The South would be pretty easy because I'm sure it makes it to Galveston.

Spring, yes. Woodlands, no.

790 is very loud in Galveston at night.
I've heard several dead spots in Humble, too, as well as at IAH.

Boys in the booth, are they light weights? Just heard the play by play team. After the Deep In The Heart of Texas sing along, one of them says, "my favorite line is, the sage in bloom is like perfume." Then he says he doesn't know what that means.
Can't get much more small town than going public with a make-fun comment about something the locals do know about. Hey, Jim Crane, you get what you pay for, or don't pay for!

That's a matter of opinion, Willie. Most Astros fans I've spoken with are pleased with Robert Ford and Steve Sparks.

Let's give them more than three games before we run them out of town.

The Astros had the lightweight announcers the past few seasons, including the moribund Milo. I'd say give the new guys a chance, except no one can hear them given the broadcast handicap they have in KBME.

I cannot pick up the games at night in Kingwood. Love Baseball on the radio, just can't get it up here. But surprisingly I can pick up 650 a lot better at night than 790.

Since KIKK is a daytimer, I'm sure you mean WSM.

For those outside the 30-mile radius of Minute Maid Park, there is always MLB Audio or the At Bat app on your smart phone. It's only $20 a year.
