AT 40 in San Francisco

I have a sort of random question regarding American Top 40---

What stations carried it in San Francisco and when did they start? I know the current incarnation runs on Star 101-3 and I think the old KFRC used to air the old 1970's version of this show, until CBS Radio changed the station's format to an Indian language format several years ago.

I'd like to now more about the program the first
time around. When was it first aired in San Francisco and on what station?

Thanks in advance

KNEW (910) was the first AT40 affiliate...they waited almost a year after the show's launch to add it.

By the late 70s/early 80s, KYA was running it. I don't know if they grabbed it back when KNEW flipped to Country in 1974 or not.

An aircheck exists of the tail end of AT 40 on KYA in 1981. I'm guessing it went to K101 when the KYA/KSFO oldies thing happened in 1982.

By the way, anyone researching this online may run across a reference for KDEO, San Francisco as one of the launch stations. It's a typo. KDEO was San Diego.

I specifically remember hearing AT40 on the old KCBS-FM (97.3) around 1981 until they flipped to KRQR in '82. I think it went to K101 after that.

The aircheck of AT 40 on KYA (turns out it's KYA-FM) is on the Bay Area Radio site...it's from May 31, 1981. The move to KCBS-FM would have come after that.

Technically, the 'KSFO/KYA thing' happened in stages; King Broadcasting bought KSFO at the end of '83, and the stations began simulcasting Gene Nelson's show in the summer of '86, followed by everything except KSFO-contracted A's games in 1987.
The only notable event between the two stations in 1982 was Gene Nelson returning to KYA-AM, after 17 years at the 'old' KSFO.

Thanks for the correction. I got my timeline way off on that one by relying on memory rather than research.

I think you're right. I moved there in November 1981 and remember hearing it on KCBS-FM. I think KYA-FM had flipped to K-lite by that point.

Weird thing is, KCBS-FM then sounded more like what would later be called a 'classic hits' station. They weren't really CHR at all. But at that time, I don't recall there being a real CHR in town except for KFRC, and they also played quite a bit of urban product. KYUU was close, but was more AC. K101 even more so. KITS ("Hot Hits") turned everything on its ear in 1983.

Just a side comment here...I understand the reference to "Fighting Irish", but I'm wondering if all hell would break loose if someone referred to a college football team as the "Fighting Mexicans"...just a thought.

Not to be a stickler or anything, but it wouldn't have hurt to change the wording of this question, as it mirrors my post in Chicago ---

What stations carried it in Chicago and when did they start? I know the current incarnation runs on Kiss,
and re-runs of classics can be heard on WLS, but I'd like to now more about the program the first
time around. When was it first aired in Chicago and on what station?

Thanks in advance
