AT 40 on V-102.5?

I'm kinda surprised that no one has mentioned this, but I have heard reruns of old episodes of American Top 40 with Casey Kasem on Sunday mornings on V-102.5 the last couple of weeks. I don't know if this is or will become a trend, but I hope it continues. I have enjoyed listening to it!

Two weeks ago, they ran an old episode of the top 40 newcomers of the 1980s. (I didn't listen for the ending, but I'm sure Madonna was number 1! ::)) Then last Sunday, they ran a normal weekly episode from the summer of 1983. I didn't even need to listen all the way to the end of that one because I remembered that "Every Breath You Take" by the Police was #1 that week! 8))

Maybe the reason why none of you mentioned this is because you knew that I live in the "city of license" and you were just waiting on me to get around to mentioning it! ;D Yeah, that's it! ;D

I'll take a Casey rerun or new one (who cares if he's pushing 100 yrs old!) over Ryan Seacrest's show..listening to him is like reading a celebrity gossip magazine. I hope they keep him on and V-102.5 is underrated! Better than Jack half the time.

One of these days I must seek out the FCC paperwork regarding 102.5 move to the thriving metropolis of Pegram. Bud's legal eagle is an expert at creative writing. The theme is around how the station will provide (insert COL here) a voice it never had. It's just another way to serve the community.

If you ever find out anything, report back to us, would you? As far as "serving" Pegram, about all they could do is come out here on the 4th of July and cover the goings-on here that day. We really go all-out for the fourth here in Pegram, and V-102.5 has been out here in the past, but I don't think they were here this year. The rest of the year, it's pretty quiet here, and most of us here like it that way anyway.

Agreed. I'm really surprised no one is carrying Casey's hot AC countdown here anymore. Star 97 was the last station to carry it, and we all know how long that has been!

I am enjoying the Casey "AT40" reruns as well. The first time I heard AT40 80's replays was probably about three years ago. Driving near Collinwood one Sunday morning I thought at first listen there was a retro-80's format station. Then Casey Kasem introduced "Queen of Hearts" by Juice Newton at number 12. This was strange. Perhaps some Sunday morning jock slapped a random album on turntable, an AT40 album that was not discarded twenty-plus years ago.

Then at next break a retro liner removed all doubt. Thought it was a good idea then and same today.

Back in 1985 FM100 Memphis would give away the week's AT40 program (still on vinyl) to a lucky caller.

Some random thoughts about AT40:

I actually enjoyed the three-hour version more than the four-hour show. I just thought it "flowed" better without the long-distance dedications, archives, countdown "extras," and the recap of the previous week's top 3 at the beginning of the program. I was also disappointed that the four-hour version was not a longer countdown, maybe top 50 as opposed to "just" top 40.

Hearing these old programs points up just how little of the music library is being played these days. When was the last time you heard "Magic" by Olivia Newton-John on the air? She was a major star of the '70s and '80s, and this was her second biggest hit, with about a month at #1! And this was just a couple of years after Grease! (I suppose I could point out that "Magic" was from Xanadu, and that movie was a dud!) I don't exactly have a strong hankering to hear "Magic" by ONJ on any kind of a regular basis, but it would actually be kinda nice if they would substitute it for the burned-out "Physical" every once in a while! ::)

I can't help but wonder if reairings of old AT40 programs are not terrestrial radio's way of competing with the satellite stations. ??? Similar to courier37027's thoughts, I wondered where V-102.5 acquired these old programs that they are airing; then I realized that some network is syndicating them to the stations that are carrying them.

On a similar note, I liked Hollywood Hendrix's Retro Rewind program, and I still have some old CDs of it, and I am disappointed that Hollywood discontinued his program! :'( (It was better than Backtrax USA!)

Rob, IIRC AT40's journey through Nashville included stops at 92Q, Kicks 104 and Y-107. Romer probably knows the dates and if other stations.

93.1 The Point in Knoxville has been airing the classic AT40 with Casey Kasem for about a year.

Casey is definately sounding his age..the promo's on 93.1 in Knoxville make him sound like the rpm's are down about 5, that is if they were still on vinyl.

If Casey is sounding his age, then Shadoe Stevens' AT40 countdowns will be played soon. Casey will start his own retro countdown show opposite of the "new" Stevens retro AT40. It will be countdown wars and time warp all over again, I tell ya.

What was AT40's history in Nashville?

Casey ended his run at 107.5 The River when the show transitioned over to Ryan Seacrest. Now the show might get pulled off the River if they don't air Ryan Seacrest's silly midday show. I wish they'd bring Rick Dees back to The River.
