I picked this up in my car Sunday morning from about 9:15-10am ( I live in Orlando). What a hoot!!!!!...

They were playing an AT 40 from this week in 1971. VERY INTERESTING.... Casey Kasem sounded AWESOME as a broadcaster back then. It was quite funny hearing him announce what I believe was song number 23, "Riders On The Storm" from The Doors...The song was TOTALLY edited to about 3 minutes and Casey said "There is the late Jim Morrison & The Doors with......'

I recommend this show....VERY INTERESTING....
 
I caught this a few weeks ago and absolutely love it too. The music selection and production elements are entertaining to me, and it really takes you back to when Casem was "the voice" of pop music for people like us who didn't have access to the Billboard charts. XM's 80s channel does the same thing Sunday afternoons. I heard the July 27th 1984 countdown a couple of weeks ago, back in the day when Prince and Ray Parker Jr. ruled the charts!
 
I was listening three weeks ago, the countdown was from 1974 and casey was saying "at 40 is heard on great radio stations like - WLOF, channel 95 in Orlando fla.

that was the station i heard the AT 40 shows on as a kid. talk about a flashback......
 
This is why I still think CBS is better than CC or COX. On some level they often get it right
 
My fiancée and I listened to it and enjoyed it when we were visiting back in May. The production value was outstanding too. Very seamless with the Casey voiced IDs for Q105 throughout the show.

Q105 sounded great overall. Nice station. ;D

Actually my dear, this great, classic AT40 program is offered by Premiere, which is owned by Clear Channel. (www.premiereradio.com/shows/view/at40_70s.html)

The idea from the show came from one of the CC corporate programming guys who has since joined Randy Michaels at Tribune.

I agree with all of you... It's a great sounding show, and a riot to listen to for those of us who grew up listening to Casey.
 
so American Top 40 is a CC production. However, is any CC station in Tampa Bay including WSRZ live at least 18 hours a day? I admit WSRZ sounds good. I think Q105 is live 18 hours a day. You can correct me if I'm wrong. On a side note, RickSklar 77 and my handle are appearantly both derived from the same source.---------Unless you really are Rick Sklar and then :p I'm Mrs. John Rook.

In Fargo, ND KEGK-FM (106.9) is playing AT-40 from the 70's also. It must be in syndication... here is your chance to aircheck Casey in his hey day.

In the last few years of his life (when he was a consultant), I was lucky enough to be hired twice by Rick.

He was a great combination of pure genius and pure kindness, plus he had the best stories, including the one where he coined the phrase "blast from the past". (Rick and Murray the K were looking for a sound effect to introduce oldies of the time. Rick grabbed a fire extinguisher off the wall, fired it off, and said, It's a blast!. Murray said, A blast from the past!)

And all John Hogan could come up with is Less is more. What a dork.
 
Although I did meet John Rook in Pittsburgh at KQV and knew some the staff ( Roy Elwell, Jim McLaughlin, Henry Da Becco)---------my connection to WABC was purely as a fan. I was the world's first girl radio geek! :eek: Or DJ Groupie as Doug Hoerth called me! ::) or not. That is why I like Q105. Marvin Boone reminds me of the late Henry DaBecco. I'm old!
 
Casey was the first. Dick Clark actually did fill in once, but only once. I do recall Dick Clark having a cowntdown show called "Countdown America" in the 80's that was pretty good. Also, you can now hear old "Rick Dees Weekly Top 40" shows on XM. That show was GREAT from about 1985-88...

Does anybody know of a site that lists the schedule of AT 40 - The Seventies????

I am looking forward to hearing some shows from the summer of '77....Just to hear "You and Me" from Alice Cooper in the top 10..

NOBODY remembers that tune!!!

I remember "You and Me" very well. I even remember the lyrics "you and me ain't no movie stars, what we are is what we are". It's interesting that Alice Cooper was known as an outrageous rocker yet his biggest hits were sensitive semi-ballads such as "You and Me" "Only Women Bleed" and "I Never Cry". Those songs sounded so good on the radio back then and they still sound good, especially because they are so well rested. The only place you can hear them (on the radio at least) is AT 40-The 70s..which I agree with everyone is an excellent idea and very entertaining to listen to.
 
And this mornings replay from 1973 featured nifty songs from Clint Holmes "Playgrounds in my Mind" and Donny Osmond's "Young Love".

I promise not to drive and listen at the same time. A St Pete paper vendor almost got it this morning!
 
On the 8/73 countdown casey mentioned new affiliate WILZ/Tampa. I was going to ask if anyone remembers that station. Then I did a little research and saw that topic was discussed exactly one year ago.

There was so much variety on Top 40 in 1973. Everything from Donnie Osmond to "Money" by Pink Floyd. One of my favorite soul ballads ever was on there "Natural High" by Bloodstone. Also, Charlie Daniels "Uneasy Rider" where he plays the role of a leftist hippie, about as far as you can get from songs he would latter be known for such as "In America" and "That Ain't A Rag It's A Flag".
 
What I find interesting about this show is that it is in the old original 3-hour format. I have only heard AT 40 in the 4-hour format, and I think that the show sounds tighter in its original format of 3 hours..Kasem just gets to the point and plays the hits..

what i find so interesting are the songs that made it into the top 10 the you NEVER hear on the radio. Ever. I have been an avid radio listener since the 70s. All types of formats.

on Sunday the #1 song was 'morning after - maureen mcgovern' - which if memory serves, was the theme song of the posieden adventure with gene hackman, shelly winters, - when was the last time you heard that on the radio? when it was a hit? listening to the AT40s i have heard songs that i remembered hearing all the time on the radio, then they just vanish - it's really fun to hear those tunes again.

the nuggets you hear are great! i never miss an episode.

Yeah I was the one that raised that question a year ago. On a related note...

Does anyone recall all of the stations on which "American Top 40" was broadcast?

As JayF has reminded us, WILZ became the affiliate in 1973. Casey also mentioned in a 1976 show that the affiliate was "WLCY St. Petersburg" which must have referred to 1380 AM since WLCY-FM was licensed to Tampa. On a 1980 broadcast, Casey mentioned WYNF as an affiliate (they were still Y95 at the time.) And that's all of the Tampa mentions that I've heard so far. I personally recall hearing AT40 on 95.7 in 1982 (as either 96KX or Magic 96) and at some point (maybe 1984 or 85?) the show switched to Q105 where it remained until exactly one week after Casey Kasem left in 1988. Can anyone fill in the gaps?
