AT 4033 or 4040

I use the 4033 on narration audio. The only problem with it is that you must have a quiet room.

It's excellent for natural sounding recording, but awful if you have a PC or air conditioning in the room.

It should... In my home studio I use a 4033, amongst others.

If you have treated the room, and have really good processing it should work great.

Personally I like the Terry & Chance ADC-1 it's a killer voiceover mic that had very little coloring but it really saves on the amount of processing in post-production.

I took a shot at it on E-bay and got one. I am not feeling bad at all about this one.
It blows many old school mics out of the water.

The 4040 is better suited toward voice, the 4033, better for a guitar cab. Keep in mind that the 4033 is an electret, while the 4040 is a "true" externally biased condensor. In general, that makes the 4040 more consistent over time. Both are on the bright side, with the 4033 exhibiting a bit more harshness. Both have a "tight" high-end. In the AT family, sibilance is usually less of a problem than mouth noise. Also, the entire AT family is very, very sensitive, but the 4040 is slightly less prone to picking up unwanted noise and has less self noise. I love the AT family, with the 4047 being my favorite of the bunch. I use a 4040 at home and often preferred it to my old TLM103, but not always. Anyhow, the diaphragm in the 4033 is smaller than that in the 4040. The 4033 is considered to be a "medium" diaphragm and the 4040, a large diaphragm.

Hope that helps!

Emmett

I have to agree with Emmett's observations. I prefer the 4033 over the 4040, as it seems to represent me better, or at least that's what the recording engineer says.

Emmett, have you ever seen a comparison chart for AT mics? I asked one of their applications guys about a chart that would give some guidelines for the product, such as what to use for grand piano, what to use for upright string bass. His reply was priceless. "You always want the most expensive one." :D

I've always purchased their mics, and have a handful of 2020 and several 4070 mics. It would be nice to have some sort of guideline for their various products.
