At a good price

@DavidEduardo
Let me pick your brain about some numbers. Buddy of mine is looking to buy a Class A station let's call it a 6kw and has two options both with solid coverage pretty much of the entire market MCALLEN AND OR EL PASO. Of the 2 border cities what market would you think has a better chance of generating more revenue? Are border cities normally a bad investment because of the amount of stations on the Mexican side? I worked for the number 1 and #2 station McAllen for a long time KGBT and 96.1 and we always had solid numbers but i never dealt with the sales numbers so no idea if the diary numbers translated to big sales.

I’m not David, but I’m very familiar with both markets and was actually born in El Paso and was there for a week last month.

Obviously the most important thing is how many listeners do the stations cover. You can’t sell anything or build an audience if you don’t have any reach.

The El Paso market is substantially more compact than McAllen-Harlingen-Brownsville, where you really need at least a C1 to cover the bulk of the population. In El Paso, there are a few translators up on the Franklin Mountains that actually have very decent coverage of most of the populated areas despite their low power levels.

I’m not aware of any Class As at that location on the mountain though, so if the station being offered is a rimshot Class A, based on the East Side / West Side topography I would suggest you pass. Same answer for McAllen too.

Just giving a example of a class A if it was smack in the middle of the market and had pretty good coverage, I've seen markets like Vegas where translators are doing very well in sales and even better in ratings than so much bigger operations so i know programming is key. I guess i just want to know what market a bigger money maker is.

Both markets are pretty similar in size. However, the Brownsville/McAllen area is one of the poorest regions in the United States. I think you will also need to take into account what format you are going to do as well as the demographics of your format and what other stations you will be competing against.

Is 103.1 in El Paso still down after getting struck by lightning in early June? Maybe that's the one up for sale, they might have to buy a new transmitter?

"Further examination reveals that the top of the final transmitter tube is blown off and the
damaged tube socket will require complete replacement but the licensee has been unable to
locate a replacement tube socket so it appears that a replacement transmitter will be required."
