Actually selling DirecTV had been discussed back when the DOJ lawsuit was going on.

I wrote SERIOUSLY considering it. In the citation you provided, it was explored only mildly to let the Warner deal go through, in this case, it's because of business pressure, in no small part because of what the activist investor is challenging management with.

Reported that Apollo (the company that just bought Cox Media) has offered a deal to buy DirecTV:

The deal would allow AT&T to retain control, similar to the deal Apollo made with Cox.
