AT&T to consider selling CNN and TMZ

I suggested this when the deal was announced. The reason: AT&T primarily wants Warner Brothers for content creation. Turner Broadcasting is an afterthought. Lately, the CNN folks have been consolidating their operations in the old Techwood Place campus in Atlanta. It could make for an easy sale.

However, CBS might not be the only bidder. Viacom is obviously looking for new cable properties. They just lost out to Discovery for the Scripps Interactive channels. They had offered $10 billion in cash. That's serious money. CBS also has some cash in the bank thanks to divesting the radio division. Perhaps they could partner, give the news channels to CNN, and the other channels to Viacom? The Redstone family might like that.

According to the article in the OP: “They don’t want any controversy,” one source with knowledge of AT&T’s intentions says.

Don't know if this is any way related, but I noticed CNN has dropped their "Breaking News" banner this afternoon for the first time in months. Changes afoot? Or just a slow news day? Perhaps just some internal adjustments, don't want to make much more out of it. Something tells me though there are some underlying changes coming to CNN.

so AT&T wants to get rid of the two properties that may screw them over with the Trump administration as Trump has had bad blood with CNN in recent months and of course you have TMZ, the most controversial entertainment news agency in the world as they depend on paparazzi stocking celebrities left and right.

but if i'm AT&T, i would make sure only CNN and TMZ is slow but retain the rest of the Turner Networks and merge that with the HBO networks, the AT&T Sports Networks and all DirecTV owned networks the acquired from buying out DirecTV in 2015 into one whole division and call it the AT&T Entertainment networks.

Bingo. You nailed it there.

AT&T is a consumer based company. They don't want the headache of facing pro-Trump boycotters dropping their cell phone service and DirecTV. Getting political in a consumer-oriented business is a lose-lose-lose proposition.
