At WGOC...They Have Lost Their Minds!!!

OK Folks...here is the latest bone headed move....and it is a biggie!
WGOC...a rare heritage AM station which consistently pulls good numbers and beats most of the FM's in the Tri-Cities...has announced they are changing frequencies. That's right...while your mouth is hanging open.. check out the announcement on their website!

www.wgoc.com

Some suit at Citadel...has obviously contracted the "Cheap Channel Let's Blow Up Another Great Station Stupid Disease"!!!! It's hard enough just trying to find a loyal AM audience these days. And these listeners (older demo) are going to break old habits and make the switch? Well of course not!!!
They will turn on 640AM and believe WGOC has switched to Sports!!!

To beat it all...WGOC is switching over to a frequency (AM 1320) that already offers sports!!

A buddy of mine and I have voted this the stupidest move ever in the history of Tri-Cities radio!!!!!!

Any seconds?

TK

Alright,
First of all, I think we can all agree that the Stupidest Move Ever in the History of Tri-Cities Radio was the Rabbit's firing of Dennis Kelly. Did you see the numbers he put up over there ::)? To quote the Donald, they were "Yooge". And yet for some reason the Donald was quoted to D.K as well when they told him, "Ya' fired." That was poor decision making at it's finest.
As far as the bick shake up coming...I think this market has needed a TRUE sports station for a long time and am really looking forward to the "Monster". Plus it will be nice to have ESPN radio on a signal that actually covers the Tri-Cities.

Sorry. I have to disagree. It's a move intended to lower the age demographic. This area needs a high-power sports talker. I think it has a lot of potential, but I am a little biased (see previous post I started). No, the dumbest move has to be K-Rock going to the Hog. All that's doing is making every alt-rock/modern-rock fan angry. Sorry, Scott...I know this wasn't your decision cause you know better.

This is one of the largest markets without a true sports station in the country.

It's not like WGOC will cease to exist. It will be on WKIN.

I think the dumbest move in the history of the market is for the market to be without a true sports station for this long!

Other candidates-

ETSU not paying Chip Kessler the money and letting Chuck Jones become their play-by-play voice for the 2002 football season.

Bristol Broadcasting just letting The Sports Fox fall to pot. Holston never changing WKPT to all sports, instead surrounding their many sports play-by-play contracts with Duke Ellington for years.

Just resigning country to WXBQ.

Just resigning WQUT's morning show to "John Boy and Billy."

WYXZ (there is a station) not jumping the gun of WQUT and changing to an AOR format during the height of "rock as pop music" era of the late 80s.

WXIS trying to program rap music to Erwin.

WEMB coming up with the term "Tennalina."

Any radio station- ANY radio station- that changes its format on Sunday to "All Gospel" when there are already 500 radio stations around here that play gospel music seven days a week!

YES another STUPID move for Tri Cities radio.

What are those IDIOTS thinking? ???
Oh well, those IDIOTS will make our WXBQ ratings even higher for the next book ---I'm predicting a 28 or better, especially with this stupid move.

Check the next books for the results and we'll see that Mr. D is right again !!!

p.s...... PRATTE4LIFE ---- by the way ---- I think you meant WZXY not wyxz

No matter what you think about the WGOC move, it's a COMPLETELY different format than WXBQ. Let's say, for sake of argument that 640 will lose listeners, they won't go to WXBQ. People who listen to Merle Haggard are STILL not going to listen to Taylor Swift. Never will, especially when you consider the average age of WGOC 640's listeners.

What's this? An employee- in fact one heavily hinting he's an executive- at Bristol Broadcasting underrating sports programming?

Who'd have thought?

J- You're absolutely right. Besides, if I live in Sullivan County, which is where WGOC traditionally catered to once upon a time, then I merely have to change to WKIN.

Now, older listeners tend to have trouble switching the dial, but my guess is they will and the WKIN numbers will grow.

The only stations that could possibly take an increase here might be someone like WEMB in Erwin.

But they probably aren't smart enough to capitalize on it over there.

Past post from SlopJockey:

Whether that's sarcasm or not doesn't matter. It was done for a reason. And the fact that I'm down here in North Carolina is for a reason, and I'm glad I'm here.

Now, as for WGOC, as stated in a previous post, the market needed a high powered sports station. But, the market also needs a classic country station. WGOC has proved that there is a place for classic country in the market. Maybe someone will pick up where they have left off. I don't think 1320 is the right place for it, though.

I'm wondering- what about WKOS?

But you may be selling 1320 short. Yes- it is basically only heard well in Kingsport. But as an automated sports station- it showed up in the book.

I think the same will happen with classic country.

Not that they would ever do what I want, but how does Highway 106 sound around Bristol and Johnson City?

There are too many stations playing "new country". I can pick up WKSK 580, though, but I haven't listened lately. How classic are they?

I worked at Highway 106 in Boone for a while, and to tell you honestly, for a 25K signal, they didn't have that much reach, even around the area. It was hard to pick them up, even in Banner Elk, which was not that far away. They have a very limited area.

Then it must get blocked by the mountains. At least in the car, it's quite clear in Winston-Salem.

Which is a bad thing if I want to listen to Mix 106 in Charlotte. I don't that much since their music changed (it was the same satellite format WKPT/WKTP had, but that format has gone downhill), but Highway 106 gives me trouble in Salisbury, 40 miles northeast of Charlotte, and in Thomasville, 20 miles southeast of Winston-Salem.

Yep, those Western NC/Eastern TN mountains play havoc with signals getting from one side to the other. Best place to go around here to listen to radio has to be Mountain City. You can get the Tri-Cities stations and stations from all points to Charlotte and Winston-Salem. If you get a free day, go up there and check it out. It's pretty cool.

Boy that sounds like an exciting day! Come on honey we're heading to Mountain City today, we're gonna sit in the car all day and listen to radio from all over the southeast! Yippee! Cancel the trip to Myrtle Beach, we're going to Johnson County! ;D

Actually, never mind. I see your point, but I was just saying you can get a lot of stations in Mountain City, not that it's a great place to visit. Let me rephrase my previous post. The next time you're going over the mountain to somewhere like Boone or some place else in Western North Carolina to ski or something, check out all the signals you can get in Mt. City.
Is that better?

Damn..oops I mean Darn....What a bunch of nit pickers!!!!!Does no one remember when you were young, foolish and full of enthusiasm for our art form and how neat it was to hear distant stations?I'm not calling you young, Jason..just younger and more entusiastic than some of us old fogies.

I wouldn't be so sure, George. 16 years in this business, and I feel like I am about 50! Sad thing is that I am only 31.

I am reviving this topic because I think it is fair to say that after four months this is NOT the worst move in the history of Tri-Cities radio.

In fact, I think that with the recent books and the moves Citadel has been making Bristol needs to be wondering what they have been thinking.

First of all, the essential flip-flop of 1320 and 640 frequencies- with a new morning show on 640- allowed WJCW to take Sean Hannity from WFHG and firmly make them the top rated talk station in town. Whereas back in November WFHG was beating WJCW, this move has forced WFHG to juggle their schedule- and they are doing it poorly with almost every syndicated program they air on tape delay at some point or another.

Granted, losing Imus didn't help WFHG, but I could never understand why Hannity wasn't more embraced by WFHG. He's on the cusp of overtaking Rush Limbaugh as the top talk show host in the country (13.5 million listeners to 12.5), but WFHG would only air two hours.

Furthermore, WQUT went back to No. 2 in the market on the latest trend and WXBQ is now down beneath 20 for the first time anyone can remember.

What is going on at Bristol?

By not emphasizing "The Sports Fox" more, it appears it gave the green light to Citadel to monopolize that format in the market and take the male ad demographic completely from that station. Yes- the signal there isn't much- but a REAL sports station would bring in numbers similar to when it was WXBQ-AM in the 90s.

Other than that- latest trends- as I predicted WEMB up a bit because they do some classic country, WXSM gaining ground now that their format is becoming established and it figures to grow during football season, and WGOC is still in the books.

Makes you wonder- if Citadel was to really take on WXBQ and change WKOS to country, could WQUT go back to No. 1 as they were in the '80s- and largely playing many of the same songs that were popular in the '80s?

Hmmmm.

How bout this one...if you happen to get lost in Mountain City...it's a great place to listen to radio stations...or watch the grass grow....your choice....
