AT40 on KIKM-SHERMAN

Can't add a comment to the original post for some reason...I heard one of the American Top 40 replays last weekend, and KIKM was mentioned as one of several brand-new affiliates coming on board that week. Show date was Saturday, August 21, 1976...so keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars.

I've also got AT40s recordings that mention KAFM, KFJZ and KXOL.

I was there when we added it. I remember us originally airing it Sunday nights 7-midnight.
If I recall correctly, one Paul Davis was the board op!

Listened to AT40 on KIKM 910 & KFJZ 1270 back then. Two great stations of that time.

I ran AT40 on KIKM in the mid 80's... I remember one weekend one of the discs was so warped it wouldn't make good contact with the felt turntable, and it was warbling on the air. During a break I had to scotch tape the disc to the turntable... engineering at it's finest.

Syndicators always used the cheapest, thinnest vinyl for their programs. The worst was the stuff the Southern Baptist Convention pressed "Powerline" and "Country Crossroads" on in the 80's. Great programs, but noisy and poorly mastered at a low volume to cram a 30 minute program onto one side. On a Russco or QRK the turntable rumble or pops and crackles (even when cleaned) was louder than the program. I was thankful when they started sending out CD's.

If the turntable was properly isolated and the tonearm weight balanced that should not have been an issue. The problem was more likely associated with that. I heard those programs on many very heavily processed stations and they sounded excellent.

When I was an announcer/DJ/board operator at KWTX (1230 AM) in Waco, in the late '70s, the station aired two programs on Sunday nights produced by the Southern Baptist Radio/TV Commission: "Powerline" (with Brother Jon Rivers) and "Master Control" (co-hosted by Dave Naugle and another gentleman whose name I've forgotten). A third program was "Hour of Decision" from the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

If I remember correctly, these programs were distributed on 7-1/2" reel tape, and each program was 30 minutes. We ran them back-to-back sometime between 7 and 9 p.m.

By the way, does anyone know the name of Dave Naugle's co-host on "Master Control" in the late '70s?

I think George Erwin was the other host of Master Control.

You may be right. I think the fellow I remember worked at KTVT, Channel 11, when it was an independent station owned by Gaylord Broadcasting. He may have been one of the anchors during the noon news. At Mike Shannon's history of D/FW radio/TV website (www.knus99.com), I found the name "George Nolan" listed as a notable at Channel 11. He may be the one.

George Nolan was "Captain Swabby" with Icky Twerp on the Slam Bang Theater theater on Channel 11 for years (back to the KFJZ Channel 11 days).. George was a long time newsman for TSN (Texas State Network) which was in the same location as channel 11 on the West Freeway in Fort Worth for many years.

George finally retired and last I heard from him he was in Colorado working with his brother making "Nolan Knifes"...

True, but at the small AM stations in Oklahoma and Kansas I worked at in the 80's, the turntables were 10-20 years old and good chance the tonearm wasn't balanced right, they'd cue burn a styrene 45 on first play. Worn needles didn't help. And the processing back then was Marti CLA-40's or CBS Volumax-Audimax combo.
