I don't live in Athens, but from what I hear, the new 93.9 Cat Country has given the longstanding WLAR (WJSQ) a run for its money. Anyone from down that way have any thoughts?
93.9 is the slick polished "big city sounding" radio station (read mostly voice tracked) while WJSQ is the heritage station with NASCAR doing exactly what it's done for 25 years. 93.9 has brought some new business into radio but hasn't put much of a dent in 101.7 because they have some very loyal advertisers and NASCAR. Plus 93.9 does a lot of group promotions that make it sound very Chatta-centric.
My best guess is that Brewer will eventually get tired of the relatively small payback for all that effort in a county with 7 radio stations (not counting 93.9 or 99.5 both of which target Athens) and either sell the station or more likely try to move it closer to Chattanooga.
They obviously don't understand small market radio and the importance of heritage. WJSQ has the
same newsman they've had for ions...Armstrong. That's pretty much the winner in a small town.
