Athletics on Bay Area Radio

The point is that if the A's decide that streaming rather than terrestrial radio is the future of play-by-play, they won't be taking the inconvenience of, at most, hundreds of people in the ballpark into consideration. Those people are already being reached by most of the A's advertisers through signage and between-innings ads on the video board. Play-by-play broadcasts are designed for people at work, in cars, at the beach, etc. They can't see the game, so it doesn't matter if the home run leaves the park 10 seconds before they hear the call.

With streaming the delay is measured in minutes. The San Jose Sharks broadcast the games on a transmitter in the arena. Why wouldn't the A's do something similar?

No reason they shouldn't, since no team wants to discourage any segment of its fan base from coming out to its games. Just because it's not being mentioned doesn't mean they have no intention of doing it. It's just that it's something with a big-picture significance of zilch. Again, everything that happens in any sport that isn't immediately obvious to the on-site spectators as it happens is replayed on big screens and explained on the PA system. I've been to hundreds, maybe over 1,000, major and minor league games and not once have I brought, or even considered bringing, a radio to a game, no matter how much I enjoyed the announcers on days I couldn't get to the ballpark or arena. I know what I'm there to see (in my case, largely baseball and hockey) and want to experience it through my own eyes -- and ears.

Not if it is set up properly. A properly organized stream should be within 5 seconds or so behind live. Not that it changes the calculus of the As.

If there were no such thing as network congestion what you say is true. But realistically the streams get farther behind the longer you stay connected. 60 seconds is not uncommon, and at the ballpark with a large crowd using their phones it might be worse. In fact, I wonder if a real-time stream would work reliably through an entire game.

My prediction is the A's will land on 910 KKSF or another station in the iHeart Media cluster!

Just because you haven't done it doesn't make it a strange behavior.
