Atlanta Countdown Radio History

Hey, I moved here in 1993. I know that Rick Dees was on Star 94 when I got here but Casey Kasem was not here until 94.9 picked him up around 2001. Who played Casey and Rick back in the 70s, 80s, and early 90s? Was it 94Q, Z93, or Power 99? Wasn't 97.1 a top 40 station back in the 70s? Just curious.

I don't recall when Dees first started airing in the market, but I definitely remember hearing Kasem on Z-93, on Sunday mornings back in the 70's.

Casey Kasem was on Z-93 originally, for many years in the 70's and early 80's. The show moved to Star 94/94Q in the mid 80's through the mid 90's if I recall correctly. 97.1 was FOX 97 WFOX. I believe that Casey Kasem was on FOX 97 in the 70's. I recall that FOX 97 moved into the Atlanta market in 1982-3 as an oldies station from the start. It was a top 40 station throughout the 70's while it was a Gainesville station. It was quite good if I remember. I wished that we could get it in Atlanta. The signal faded out around Sphaghetti Junction (I-85/285) at the time, however it was receivable throughout NE GA including Athens, Cartersville and the mountains.

WFOX was a top 40 in Gainesville in the 70's. WFOX moved into Atlanta in 1985 with an AC format. WFOX did not become an oldies station as "Fox 97" until 1989. As far as I know, the Fox moniker was never used before 1989 (It was known by it's callsign during the late 80's).

Casey Kasem's AT40 was so popular..

..in the late 70s that z93 played it twice Sundays. Between the two, it was probably 9-10 hours of air time each Sunday. After a great run, Top 40 radio was in the toilet in the mid-80s and his show had definitely peaked by that point. Z93 dropped steadily locally until they flipped to classic rock.

For a certain young demographic, he was the biggest name in national radio for a time. The show was incredibly well-produced for the time. Great format and pacing.

I've never heard if his engineer purposely screwed him on the famous "Casey Kasem outtakes tape" or if it was an honest (but really boneheaded) mistake. Anyone know?

The moniker may not have been used, but I remember when in the
70s they would say, "Coming up next more of your favorite hit
music, on 97 F-O-X" as it was spelled out at the end of the break.<P ID="signature">______________

Re: WFOX History

if my memory is correct, WFOX began calling themselves "fox 97" at the same time they moved to the new tower (at that time tallest in ga) and moved studios to atlanta (riveredge pkwy). the format was classic hits until 1989 (or so) when they switched to oldies... of course keeping "fox 97."

not sure, but to be honest that is some of the funniest audio that I have ever heard. EVER.

And yeah, Casey was on 92.9 in the early-mid 80's. Used to listen to him every week.

Wasnt Rick Dees run at night? Maybe on 99.7 though I could be wrong.

The moniker FOX 97 was aways used. Does anyone remember WDUN-FM, WWID(WIDE 107) and Lite 107 all on 106.7 in the 70's and early 80's?

Shamrock did the move-in to Atlanta with WFOX in the early summer of '83. They were "Fox-97" from the outset and I think Dennis Winslow might have been their first P.D. The guys there at the time said Shamrock was a first-class company to work for. Those days are long gone.

Rick Dees was on Power 99 for about a year from the fall of 1991 until they flipped to Modern Rock in October, 1992 (yes, it was the unedited Mainstream version of the countdown). Also, they did had Casey's Top 40 from 1989 until the format change as well.

Alo, I think that 94-Q had American Top 40 in 1989 when Shadow Stevens was the host, but dropped it when they've flipped to Star 94. I do know that many AT40 afflites dropped the show when Shadow Stevens became the host and Casey's Top 40 was started.

Re: WFOX History

97 F-O-X was one of the best top 40 stations in the area at the time. They covered Gainesville, Athens...the mountains and north Atlanta to about Duluth.
"It's just past 3 o'clock, at North Georgia's 1st Rock, W-F-O-X Gainesville, "The FOX". I remember Alan Dupreist -mornings and FOX news, Tom Pierce- middays, Darlene Evans- Afternoon, Allison Lane- evenings and Mark Flanigan- overnights.
"97 F-O-X" Moved from Gainesville to Atlanta in September of 1984 via the tower near Duncan City/Hoschton. They went by "Fox 97 WFOX" from the beginning of the Atlanta move. They played The hits from the 60's , 70's and 80's until it went all oldies with the same name, Fox97 WFOX. "Good Times and Great Oldies, FOX97 WFOX".
97 F-O-X had an office/(studio) with WFRC AM96 in Athens on Milledge avenue before the move.
Does anyone know where the original tower was located?

Re: WFOX History

Yes, I do remember WDUN fm,WIDE 107, Lite 106 and of course Y106.
I believe it was WDUN in the early 70's, then WIDE107 in the late 70's and early 80's. About 1983 they were LITE106, for a short time. Then came Y106/Y104
