Atlanta Format Changes

As we know, over the years, some FM stations in ATL have changed formats (some drastic – some subtle) and spurred quite a few comments on this board.

Below is an incomplete list of Atlanta FM format changes that I quickly remember since I moved back to the area. Feel free to correct any mistakes and add stations as I surely don’t guarantee accuracy. ;)

92.9 Classic Rock – AAA
94.9 Soft _____ – Country
95.5 The Beat – NewsTalk
96.1 Rock – Project (What “format” is Project anyway?)
97.1 Oldies – Urban – Classic Hits
99.7 Alternative – Top-40
104.1 (with 106.7?) Country – Urban?
104.7 ? – Christian Contemp
105.3 80’s – Spanish
105.7 Oldies – WGST – Spanish – Urban?
106.7 (with 104.1?) Country – Oldies (Classis Rock) – News
107.7 Smooth Jazz – Urban

What is your opinion of the format change itself?
What is your opinion of how the station has executed the new format?
1-Great
2-Good
3-OK
4-Don’t Care
5-Don’t Like
6-Hated with a vengeance / Drove me up a wall.

Add another class of opinions if you wish.

Seems like I did this about a week ago...
Similar. Mater of fact, I was going to add this to your thread, but the subject was just different enough to not be comfortable there :) (greatest stations vs format changes).

My focus was on the number of format changes as the market has grown. Logic would say that as Atlanta has "matured", there should be a need for more oldies, but there's something more than logic happening here. ::) (Maybe younger move-ins.) Just trying to spot a trend.

Thanx for the corrections. I guess we could add some fringe stations like 100.1 and 102.3, both from Oldies to Spanish.

I just noticed that WSB-FM and WKLS are the only 2 commercial FM stations in ATL that have never changed their call letters (although WKLS did append an "-FM" when they had the AM simul on 970).

V-103 is the longest running moniker (since 1977, IIRC) on an ATL commercial FM station.

And, as I said in another post, country on 101.5 is the longest running format (since 1968).

96.7 had a satellite Hot AC format. Was it Jones? Then it was CHR/Urban. It was also Classic Country.
97.5 had a country format before becoming Hot 97.5.
104.1 and 106.7 had the pop country or young country format in the 1990s. Young Country didn't last long.
104.7 was WALR Atlanta's Lite Rock the first year after moving in. This one time AC seems forgotten.
107.5 was a religious translator for 88.9 in Chattanooga. It was later a Jammin Oldies format.

What was the weak signaled AC around 107 in the 1990s? Was it 107.1?

97.5 was on 97.7 and licensed to Griffin as oldies WQUL. When class A 97.7 Griffin moved to class C3 97.5 Fayetteville the 97.5 licensed to Hogansville had to move to 98.1fm.

I believe your right trusty. When Hot 97.5 became Hot 107.9, 97.5 was flipped to Praise.

102.5 was a college translator in Cobb County. When 102.5 signed on as Majic or Magic IIRC, the translator moved. I think to 100.? And Q-100 blocked it and it had to move again. Do you remember when everyone thought 102.5 would become Atlanta's first Regional Mexican formatted station? That was when it was still a CP.

WGHR, the Southern Tech radio station. It was not a translator but a class D LPFM. It tried to move to 100.7 and also 101.1.

107.5 first debuted in 1998 as a "Jammin Oldies" station, then became Smooth jazz when Cox dumped WJZF for Kiss 104. I remember when they first signed on in 1998, they stunted with Stevie Wonder "Just Enough for The City" for about a week. It was actually a good station. Prior to this, there was a Moody Babble Institute Translator licensed to Roswell (think it was on Sweat Mtn) on that frequency.
