Atlanta Hawks on TBS question

> Anyone know the years TBS had Atlanta Hawks telecasts.
>
I know that TBS stopped showing Hawks games around the end of the 1993-94 season, the following season Turner re-upped their national NBA package (for TNT), and TBS joined TNT for its national NBA coverage. As far as the earilest, my guess would be around the early 70s, when TBS/17 was still a local Atlanta market-only station. bpatrick and someone else can probably give you an actual early date for when TBS has the Hawks.

Speaking of which, sorta off the topic, NBA TV on Sunday night showed a Hawks-Bullets (Wizards) playoff game from 1979, where Hubie Brown was the Hawks head coach, and his assistant was the man who followed him in both Atlanta and later in Memphis--Mike Fratello. Anyways, the game was played at the old Omni, and at the press table, at center court--it featured the old 70s WTBS 17 logo.

EDIT: I just found something from www.ourgeorgiahistory.com, that the first Hawks game played on WTCG/WTBS was on October 10, 1972.
Edited by ShawnHill on 08/16/05 08:53 PM.

Did the Hawks move from St. Louis to Atlanta in 1972??

I thought they had move to Atlanta a couple of years prior to that.

And if so, were they on local TV prior to 1972?? And if so, who covered the games??

The Hawks moved to Atlanta from St. Louis in 1968. Before the Omni opened in 1972, the Hawks played their home games at the Alexander Memorial Coliseum (now the McDonald's Arena), and I think at the time it had a seating capacity of less than 10,000. As far as who broadcasted the Hawks prior to Channel 17 in 1972, my guess would be WSB, since they had the Braves on TV as well. But thinking about it a little further, since ABC had the NBA at the time, maybe Channel 11 carried some games to coincide with the network's coverage. By the way, Ted Turner bought the Hawks in 1977, and when his company merged with Time Warner in the '90s, his sports teams went with TW.
