Atlanta June 6 Plus Ratings

I know stations can't be judged on 6 plus, however here are the June numbers for Atlanta.

Not judging (LOL), however WNNX needs a format flip. What the heck are they thinking over there.

Won't be too surprised if OG moves from 97.9 to 100.5. They won't have stellar ratings, given the presence of Majic, Kiss, and, to an extent, Star. But I can't imagine OG on 100.5 performing substantially worse than whatever form of rock is on that frequency.

Ugh. I hate to see STAR's momentum fade.

The RIVER is absolutely killing it. 10.9 share if you add in the stream! WOW!
When is the last time an Atlanta radio station had a 10 share (not counting Christmas)?

Not as easy to find out, even when factoring in the Holiday season. The Fish has not cracked a 10 share when they flipped to Christmas music. And, of course, B98.5 won't go All-Christmas.

WSRV's performance is even more impressive when one considers the fact much of Fulton County and Cobb County receive less than city grade signal strength.

WNNX's playlist is an utter trainwreck. Horrendously constructed. I'm not sure loading up on yakking is a good strategy, either.

However, the southern portions of Cobb and Fulton are not filled with Classic Rock demographics. Fayette County, likely, but it's a county of about 120,000 people, compared to Henry County, which is about 240,000 people. The combined population of these counties may be lower than the population of those residing in the northern suburbs of Fulton County.

There are personality-driven music stations that are successful like CKNO, and there are ones that are utter trainwrecks like KEGL. WNNX is more of the latter. Not a well-executed format (music or talk).

A fair number of the folks in the northern and northeastern suburbs commute to Fulton County for work.

I suspect more of 97.1's listening comes from Fulton County than you think.

I definitely agree with your trainwreck comment regarding KEGL and WNNX. :)

When I think about how strong The River comes in, especially in a car, I find it hard to believe the transmitter is 50 miles away. CMG engineering has done an incredible job.

@secondchoice, I read that mornings are syndicated on WNNX so that must save them some money. At the same time maybe more of their ratings problems?

Seems like the top 40 war goes to Q99.7 again as Power 96.1 falls again, and STAR 94.1 is not even mentioned.

For the fifth time in the last six surveys, CUMULUS Top 40/M WWWQ (Q99.7) was #1 25-54. However, the race got much tighter. WWWQ returned most of last month’s large increase, while WSB stood alone at #2 with its highest share since you were hearing what I was hearing. AUDACY Urban WVEE (V-103) had been tied at #2 with WSB. It slipped to a very close #3 despite landing its largest share in over a year. WSRV stepped up to #4 with its best outing since NOVEMBER. This gang of four was separated by a half share. WALR and WAMJ were an item at #6 but drifted apart. Both stations had up books with WALR moving up to #5 and WAMJ remaining at #6. iHEARTMEDIA Top 40/M WWPW (POWER 96.1) fell from a tie at #2 to #7.

It's a class "C" with the best interference protection. The "line of sight" on a 1700 ft. tower (1585 HHAT) plus the natural height "advantage" being closer to the north GA mountains. puts it @ 2615 feet above sea-level. Mapleton is at 978 ft. above sea-level Marietta is at 1129 and Atlanta is at 738 feet above sea-level. 1400+ feet height advantage with should make a 40 mile line of sight trip. The 98 KW should be able to overcome trees and RF noise. IIRC Cox at one time filed a construction permit to downgrade just to get a tower closer to downtown. Thankfully they never built used it. Didn't one of Roy Disney's companies put 97.1 on the that tower?

Ouch at the iHeart Spanish stations. 105.7 is getting half a share right now.

Cumulus is apparently, as I’ve said before, dead set and hell bent on having a rock format on 100.5. They’ve tried multiple variations for years, but it’s been rock forever with many times abysmal performance. It has to be billing or doing well somewhere for them to have stuck with it for this long.

I don’t think 100.5 will ever be successful or a major contender unless it has a niche format which likely wouldn’t be a very good biller. They recently re-launched variety hits on a station in Oklahoma City. Variety hits would stay out of Q and 101-Five’s range and potentially grab some listeners from 97.1 and maybe 98.5 and 94.1.

Speaking of Cumulus, they seem to be on the right footing with WKHX now.

It's not all that bad. Many Hispanic buys are based on the market population, as agencies know that in markets like Atlanta the Nielsen ratings are pretty useless for that kind of buy.

It does bill OK, but the changing ethnicity of the market makes formats like that less and less mass appeal.

iHM placed the wrong Spanish language music format on 105.7, in my opinion.
What would you put on it?

In a market that has a split Hispanic population... part from Mexico and part from Puerto Rico, the only format that both groups like nearly equally is the current reggaetón based CHR.

There isn’t much of a Mexican-American population in the area covered by 96.7. That signal is most successful with an urban oriented format.

Regional Mexican would be better on a signal with the coverage of 105.7 that covers the more Hispanic heavy communities to the north and northwest of Atlanta proper, where many Spanish speaking Mexican immigrants reside.
