Atlanta Moves Up Another Market Rank

CHRles said:
Just a few years ago Atlanta was the 12th biggest market, for a very long time I might add. Now it continues to ascend in the Arbitron market rankings, landing ahead of the nation's capital as the 8th biggest radio market.

At the rate metro Atlanta is growing, it won't be long before it moves ahead of Philadelphia as well, to become the 7th larget market.

Even more embarrassing since Cox and Clear Channel have made all of their stations sound like Greenville or Guadalajara.

This is so incredibly true. It just goes to show that Atlanta is a HUGE melting pot! This is the absolute worst radio town EVER ! No wonder the smart folks have went the way of XM.
If you want true oldies, or standards SORRY no deal.. I dont understand why we have Three country stations, Three urban stations, and yet we dont have other musical tastes covered. In my travels I have heard great radio in other cities, but not ATLANTA....

Care to elaborate on where you heard these great "true" Oldies stations, and (gasp!) Standards stations? Were they in a MAJOR market?

Atlanta has 3 Country stations b/c last time I checked Atlanta is in Georgia, a state in the South. Country music is appearantly pretty popular there, go figure!
I'm also going to take a wild guess and make a crazy assumption that b/c Atlanta has a huge black population, and a growing Hispanic population, that the Atlanta radio dial offers an abundance of Urban stations. Correct me if I'm wrong but don't most of the cities in Georgia have a large black population as well? Don't they too have a good number of Urban stations on their dial? And don't cities like NYC and Chicago also have a good number of Urban and Hispanic Urban radio stations?

Atlanta moved up another notch, but the radio still sucks!

And Atlanta radio will continue to be inferior as long as the bean counters dictate programming!

That happens to be the case in dozens of markets of all sizes, and the beancounters are 100% to blame, as the 'radio guys' have been silenced and have been forced into operating with their hands tied behind their backs.

This is exciting news! ;D

Atlanta radio isn't perfect but the competitiveness is incredible. Being in Chicago, I do miss that, a lot.

I'm talking promotions. Go to a headliner's concert at Philips Arena one day and you'll see what i mean. Even listen to Q and Star during a concert week.

Compare the number of concerts V and HOT throw each year.

Chicago radio isn't competitive like that.

We'll see if the Clear Channel properties run any differently once the CC deal finally goes private. Hopefully no more "F With All Your FMs in November."
