Atlanta Needs An Adult Alternative

In my humble opinion, I think that an adult alternative station could do very well in Atlanta. No wacky dj's, no morning shows, no promotional stunts. Just calm, music-educated people introducing new and classic music from artists like Neil Young, Liz Phair, U2, Pater Gabriel, Lyle Lovett, Bonnie Raitt, Tori Amos, Jack Johnson, Fiona Apple, Jayhwaks, Cowboy Junkies, The Sundays, Indigo Girls, Dar Williams, Beck. Throw in some other stuff to make it interesting, like alternative eighties from the Cure and the Police, blues from BB King, classic vocals from Sinatra or Mel Torme, etc., some Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, and Al Green...

KFOG in San Fran (minus the jocks) comes to mind, or even better, WDST radio Woodstock, in Woodstock, New York.

Man, I wish someone would do something like that in this market.

Who wants to listen to a radio station with no commercials? All that music is boring......
Also, the traffic guy wasn't handing out free B.J.'s.
College kids just don't get it.

When Barnes left 99x, it was one of the ideas that Chris Williams had was to change formats to a KFOG like station. Fram didn't like the idea.

KTCZ CITIES97 in Minneapolis is one of my favorites. They used to have a more expansive playlist where they promised the listener not to here the same song in a day.

I like the format idea. But think that you could add in some old school punk, alt-country, deep soul, funk, and deep, deep cuts from classic rock artists like The Kinks, Queen, and those one hit wonder rock acts like Toronto, or April Wine.

Dave is alright. The only time I get bored with Dave-Fm is when is becomes Dave Matthews FM. They tend to program to many jam band, folk rock types. How about some Replacements, Fugazi, Wall of Vodoo, and some Iggy once in a while. Not everyone my age is dead below the waist yet!

No Jocks? Naw, Just get some talent...or develop some talent... I don't want to listen to souless machine.

For what my opinion is worth. I think WRAS Album 88 was great in the 80's!

Yes DAVE is an Adult Alternative - a VERY BAD ONE!

WXRT in Chicago plays all of the above. Some of my friends called me when 92.9 went on the air and said "you have to check this station out, it will remind you of your Chicago WXRT." pfft....not even close Dave FM

Wow, sounds incredibly boring and with such a niche target I doubt their ratings would be more than a fart in the wind.

I think they kinda-sorta are, but they do have some really nice rock mixed in with their regular rotation. Honestly, other than my own station DaveFM and AM750 are the only stations that get my attention as of late.

Give us time. Once we get comfortable in our current digs I'm sure it'll be nothing but keg parties day and night, bongs and pipes all over the studio, and hookers lined up down the hall.

Should you be the first one called when we start the festivities? :)

Hey Andy,

As someone who was working at Album 88 while you were still in grade school (1989-93), I can tell you that niche radio is actually what Atlanta needs more of. Radio targeted to a smaller demo (like, say, oh I don't know... THE SHOWS ON ALBUM 88 FOR EXAMPLE) rather than the ClearChannel mass-marketing, play only what tests the best attitude.

Jeez-I would think someone working for Album 88 would get that... apparently not. I hope your mindset is not the future of radio. If so, we're all in trouble.

Kaveman,

I completely agree with your additions to the playlist. I also agree that the station should have a soul, which is why I want jocks who are calm and keep things focused on the music, rather than on themselves or whatever is happening in Hollywood.

I also agree that Dave is a step in the right direction, but not nearly enough. You are right that they play waaaay to much dave matthews and Panic stuff. I would rather hear a little of that interspersed with the deep Queen, Kinks, punk that you mentioned.

Anyone who thinks WRAS was paying attention to ratings in the eighties, which is when I was in management there, missed the point. Of course we would have liked to have more people listening, but since we wrere non-commercial and didn't even subscribe to Arbitron, it's pretty obvious that that was not the goal of the station's programming.

Thanks KLS! I really think the format can work here in Atlanta, and else wheres for that matter. I have the idea for the programming set up, but not sure how to get to the people I need to to sell it. Might be two stations this format could be inserted soon here in Atlanta.

You worked at 96, i worked at 93. Email me if you want to brain storm. My email is on my profile.

At least I still have enough competency left in me to keep from posting the same thing three times. And your statement is quite ridiculous and childish. Nice try at a jab. Try again.
