Atlanta now #10 in Arbitron DMA

Nielsen has had Atlanta at #9 for awhile in TV. Now from insideradio.com:

The Sunbelt keeps gaining — Atlanta’s now #10
and Las Vegas surges 38-32 in Arbitron’s new market rankings.
That’s the first time Atlanta’s been in the top 10 and the first time Tampa (21-19) has made the top 20. Boston falls out of the top 10 in the rankings that take effect with the Fall 2005 survey.

Basically means the stations that dont spend or try very hard (Classic Soul 102.5, 97.1, 98.5 and a few others) will profit even more so from the additional media buys that the designation of a top 10 market generates.

Take that Boston!

That's nice to hear. I think Atlanta is still a very influential radio town
for nationally syndicated radio hosts (Clark Howard, Boortz ) and breaking new acts (99x).

Are you choosing not to read the "Atlanta now #10 in Arbitron DMA" in big bold letters? Lets break it down, word by word.

1. Atlanta: Where we live
2. Now: Currently, at the present time
3. #10: The tenth in order, after nine, but before 11.
4. In: Of that particular thing.
5. Arbitron: a radio audience research company
6. DMA (Designated market area): A media market, broadcast market, media region or simply market is a region where the population can receive the same (or similar) television and radio station offerings.

DMA (Designated Market Area) is a TV term used by Nielsen. Arbitron measures metro markets, which are smaller geography. Arbitron does report what it calls the TSA, which includes any county with measurable listening to the reported market's radio stations. If enough people in Wilmington, DE listened to WSB at night, Wilmington's home county would be included in the Atlanta TSA (as well as in the Wilmington metro).

DMA's are mutually exclusive. Every county is in a DMA. When Arbitron used to compete with Nielsen in measuring TV viewing, Arbitron's ADI (Area of Dominant Influence) was analogous to Nielsen's DMA.

Remain calm!! Remain calm!!

Thank you God!!!!!

Yes, Detroit moved up 10-9. I don't think it's a case of Detroit gaining a lot of population, but Boston losing population. I read a few different times that Boston is the only large metro area in the U.S that has lost population over the past year. Nearby Providence is also on the decline, moving 34-36.

Priceless.... absolutely priceless! LMAO!

Actually it means the total national advertising dollars spent on radio in Atlanta will increase dramatically. The overwhelming largest % of national ad dollars is spent in the top ten markets.

Boy... if Atlanta could only make it into the top ten!

Um...okay. I'll just take your word for it.

If only...if only. I've heard they've invented a machine that presses ink onto paper! Some guy in Germany I think.

Arbi also reports by DMA

You're right that DMA is a Nielsen term, but it is also one that Arbitron
provides listening estimates for in the Top 50 markets (ranked by TV Households).

It's available Spring & Fall, just like the TSA number you mentioned.
