Atlanta now has an FM News outlet

I just looked at that link and in one of the articles they call WFLA in Tampa a "Newser". It is nothing more than Rush Radio with some local news inserts and a news morning show. They could call WSB and the new Merlin Philly FM "newsers" by that definition. Inside Radio: Fail.

WYAY is more like WTOP-FM 103.5 and KCBS-FM 106.9 in their news content. They do hard news better than Cumulus other station KGO-AM 810 in SFO.

I hope WYAY is No1 in their market once the June 2012 books comes out.

WTOP-FM is definitely a "News" (vs. News/Talk) station; my experience with KCBS was the same when I was last in the Bay Area but that was years ago before they had an FM outlet.

It is definately not KYW. Allnews106.7 has more of fresh sound to it. And it is the only all news station that Atlanta has. Like Houston, Atlanta had a fling long time ago with All News. But the staff is mostly ex-CNN people.

They are getting better each day. They do have had their challenges. Compared to the other four news start ups in the last year, All News 106.7 seems to be quickest to have a listenable product. That says something for the very experienced crew... and the fact that most have them have worked together for years at CNN Radio.

But it's "Newsradio 970 WFLA"! Glenn Beck!

For quite a while now, there has been a News Radio 930, WHLM, in Bloomsburg.

Every time I tune them in, however, they're playing Oldies! And the separators between the music keep emphasizing that it's news radio.

WHLM in Bloomsburg does a three hour talk show Monday through Friday with some music in the morning. They do have a heavy news commitment with CBS news every hour along with local news. When the floods happened last September, they were non stop flood coverage for over a week. After 9AM they are pretty much a gold based AC and on the weekends they run 60's and 70's music with a live oldies show on Saturday mornings. I guess full service is the best way to describe the station. WHLM is a rarity..a local station on AM with FM translators that serves the community it is licensed to.

Steve, I know this belongs in the NE Pa. radio board, but I thought I would answer your question.

The Big question is will CBS buy another FM signal in philly for KYW ?
Why? You get great ratings, you are the only game in town, no competition and none on the horizon. Why go FM?

The usual thoughts will be that an FM all news station will get out better than AM, less interference/static, but also would attract a younger demo. So the $64,000 question is, what are KYW's demos? As the only game in town, do they, an AM station, which gets great ratings in a major market, is the station pulling in a decent share of the younger demo who want the timely traffic info and weather that is part of what KYW offers? If they are, then I totally agree, why go to FM. If on the other hand, if KYW is only appealing to the 55+ crowd, then YES there would be a market for a simulcast KYW-AM/FM like WIP-AM/FM and WPEN-AM/FM for sports radio.

The only reason for KYW to simulcast on FM is if they get some competition. With Merlin deciding to take 106.9 talk and not news, KYW has no competition.
