Atlanta PPM: December 2012 Ratings

http://ratings.****************/cgi-bin/rol.exe/arb047

WSB-AM drops from 8.3 to 6.3.
WYAY goes from a 1.5 to 1.1.
WZGC from a 1.1 to 0.7.
WABE from a 2.3 to 2.9.

and

WGST from 0.1 to 0.2.

With the exception of local weather and news occasionally, I spent my time listening to either Pandora or SiriusXM for the classic Christmas music and oldies. Nothing else really worth listening to on the Atlanta airwaves.

My $0.02, YMMV

Look at WSRV 5.2 TO 5.5 I don't understand why someone does not go after that. I see WZGC 1.1 to 0.7 I see they made the right decision. WSB AM is done! New format please!

Are you being sarcastic? WZGC was Sports for the entire period of this survey, and they pulled a 0.7 (Dave was at a 2.3 the last month they were on air for the entire survey period) - I think it's about time CBS admits the flip to Sports was a mistake (rather than making excuses like "It takes months to build up a Sports audience" - it's been a month and a half, and I don't see that Sports audience building up yet...)

IIRC WFAN NYC took a couple of years to become one of the top billing stations in the USA. The November / December ratings periods are sometimes misleading.

BTW there was a rumor the 790 use to bill more than $700,000 a month with a 6+ of around 1. Sports programming bills amazing amounts of money verses the ratings. A large part of your "basic" cable bill (if you have more than the local channels) goes to ESPN.

I saw the weeklies from the past several weeks, and 92.9 has pulled ahead of both 680 and 790. Of course, 92.9's ratings are going to have to be much higher for CBS to keep the format. But, it's early in "the game." Also, keep in mind that sports stations can bill really high with lower ratings than music stations.

Both Power and Q slipped a bit, but Q slipped more

That's probably because of Christmas music on B98.5, though - the same thing happened to Q last December

It looks like there was compression affecting Q100 and Star 94 from the Christmas music on The Fish and B98.5. Next month will also contain Christmas weeks.

All News 106.7 is doing about what I expected at this point. 1 share. I wonder if Cumulus will find it sustainable in the long run, especially given how cheap they tend to be.

What Christmas music on B98.5?

What Christmas music on B98.5?

The Christmas music they played mixed in with the usual tracks - that's enough to have an impact on people flipping from Q and Star (which played no Christmas music)

We don't know, but it might have. Also, The Fish went all Christmas music, and their increased share had to come from somebody.

No, they will not be happy with a 1 share. The format is too expensive. I really think there are two things wrong:

1. The need a program director who has complete control and can tweek what they are doing. AN106.7 has the needed talent, but they need a successful, strong leader. I am not sure if Cumulus will allow that.

2. They need to spend money on advertising. TV commercials are a must. That costs money. Again, not sure if Cumulus has the stomach for it. Too many people still do not know AN106.7 exists because they are at the end of the dial.

I've seen billboards all over the place - also "banners" on buses - and one of the major networks mentions them all the time during the evening news

Maybe the people of ATL need another MUSIC station (i. e. Classic Hits, Alternative, AAA, etc.), since both new talk stations seem to be tanking

Agree, they've spent a ton on marketing and have very little to show for it being the 18th ranked station in terms of # of listeners and 22nd in market share, ouch.
If they were serious about all news long term Mr Adams wouldn't have been fired just months into the job.

We do know as a matter of fact. More than 1/2 of B98's ratings increase in Dec came from listeners
of a number of other stations in the market which isn't unusual nor unexpected.

They have spent a ton on billboards and bus advertising, but that should only be part of the campaign. Have a look at these two TV commercials and see if you think they would have an impact. I know CC got impact for the new Power station with TV.

A targeted cable buy on CNN and Fox News would go a long way. I know it is not my money, but I am just thinking out loud.

By the way... just for fun, here is the 1:30 spot that CBS made for WNEW to circulate before WNEW went on the air:

Regardless of promotion, I just think all-News is a very difficult format in Atlanta period. It's not doing well in Houston, either (another sunbelt city). I think it is a very difficult and expensive format to start up, especially in southern cities that are not as established as places like Philadelphia, New York, Boston, LA, Detroit, Chicago, Boston, DC, San Francisco, etc. ALL of these successful all-News stations in large markets have been around for years and are on heritage frequencies.

Just remember we're talking about Cumulus here - a company that has generally not been known to put a lot in to their stations (although they did invest a lot in talent for All News) and probably wants quick results. The 106.7 website has improved, but it took them forever to get a half decent one with at least some local content.
