ATLANTA RADIO IS...

...short on variety. While I, like Brent, would love to see an oldies station here in the A-T-L, I also am enough of a realist to accept the fact that dollars motivate most everyone in this business to make the decisions they do. I will note, however, that I spent the last several days driving thru 3 states (Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama). While at times the radio was obviously amateurish, at best, the MUSIC was wonderful! Variety was the key! I heard songs I never thought I'd hear again. And it didn't matter if the format was oldies, AC, Pop, R&B oldies or whatever. Even the TALK stations had bumper music that was catchy!

Look, Atlanta radio will program what they think will rake in the bucks. BUT, I'd love to see someone really put together something different and not play to the numbers game. I know it won't happen but, after my drive, I'm convinced that SOMEBODY out there understands that we all don't want to listen to the same stuff day-in and day-out. The problem is, in my opinion, there is nobody out there anymore with the talent, guts and financial accumen to attempt to pull it off.

A-"THE HELL"-MEN ;)

Sadly, Atl radio will get even more boring once Dave leaves. The market's stations are just too cookie cutter for a top ten market.

And it's no coincidence that the lions share of these stations you heard are NOT, I repeat, NOT owned by these scum bucket conglomerate corporate sewage treatment facilities that happen to feed their outputs to an STL and then to an FM transmitter.

Many of the stations are owned by local operators or smaller regional chains. They listen to their listeners and communities they operate in more than the suits and so-called CONsultants. (emphasis placed on the word CON as in CON JOB)

They seem to still turn a modest profit and serve their audience well. Listen to a NON-CORPORATE LOCAL station like WOOF-FM in Dothan, AL. Here is a great example of what we miss out, guess they must be doing something right, no corporate shill turds running the show, locally owned and operated since 1964, same format, same simple principle. And they've got no problem serving their advertisers and listeners equally well, their numbers confirm this.

Use TuneIn radio app on your cellphone and you can find many of these independently run local stations online, and enjoy them here. Sad you have to do that, but hey, corporate radio doesn't care or want you listening, so if you want to hear radio again, this is how it's done!

Thanks Sprint for a great LTE network. I can listen all day and never have to turn on this shitty FM dial of garbage corporate America is spreading over my town with the stench it has become.

Generally I agree but one corp that I would have to give some credit to is Lincoln Financial. Mind you, I don't care for HOT AC music nor do I even listen to STAR all that much considering it's HOT AC but Lincoln Financial does give more power to the local PD of each station it owns. For example, find a HOT AC station owned by LF in one city and then match it with Atlanta. You will see large noticeable differences. LF allows a format, rather that be alternative, urban, oldies, to be tweaked, twisted and manipulated by the local PD as according to what that specific community wants to hear which I have to respect.

Meanwhile, many of the formats offered by Clear Channel (they are the worse at this) are simulcasted on different stations. When Project 9-6-1 was in Atlanta, I could listen to about Dalton or so and flip over to Rock 105 out of Chattanooga and hear the SAME dj and the SAME song. 20 years ago, it was small town radio stations using satellite feeds from Jones Media and 20 years ago, I was scratching the walls to get to larger cities where the station was seriously more live and local. Now, everything has been flipped and while many of those small town stations still use JOnes Media for their music, they also have added much more local content where as larger city radio stations owned by the 4 c's have largely went away from being local.

It's funny, I can go to a city, turn on the local Top 40 or Rock station (that is what I know and listen to), and tell you if it's a Clear Channel or Cumulus station just by listening to the music. For example, nearly all active rock stations owned by Cumulus sound like the bone and nearly all active rock stations owned by CC sounded like Project.

I will leave Lincoln Financial out of this rant though because for a medium size corporation, they do give more power to the local PD of that station.

P.S. I hear people say that Power sounds a lot like Z100 in New York. No, Power sounds like nearly all Clear Channel CHR stations. Go check out 97.3 KISS FM in Savannah or G105 out of Raleigh. All sound the same and as soon as something new comes out, all of the CC stations will debut it on the same day and in some cases, even the same time. Q100 is not a HOT AC leaning CHR station. Q100 is a cumulus CHR station. Nearly all cumulus CHR stations sound the same. Occasionally, I've see some odd ball stations. For example, Radio 104.5 out of Philly (alternative owned by CC) sounds nothing like most of the CC alternative stations. That station has been left alone by CC for the most part.

I will agree with you on Lincoln and to an extent, I feel CBS also lets stations do their own thing, at least with their Alternative stations. Listen to Live 105/S.F. and then HFS/Baltimore and see how many similarities you can find. I will also agree with Radio 104.5 being very different from other CC Alternatives, but their playlist seems to have tightened in recent months.

With the amount of college stations on the air with decent signals, you'd think somebody would do something...

Small market CHR stations owned by Cumulus sound a lot better then the bigger markets. They also have better imaging, voiceovers and for the most part all live & local DJs even overnight. For example Q97.9 in Portland, Maine (wjbq.com). Why can't Q100 sound like that?
