Atlanta Radio Ratings: January 2015

The January 2015 survey period covers Thu. 1/1/15 - Wed. 1/28/15 -
publicly released data for subscribing stations age 6+ overall:

Atlanta: http://ratings.****************/cgi-bin/rol.exe/arb047

Next report will be for the February 2015 survey period covering Thu. 1/29/15 - Wed. 2/25/15.
The data release date will be Mon. 3/16/2015.

Rodney Ho pointed out that 100.5 fell in the AM. Revenue aside, it is interesting that the unsaleable 6+ showed an increase (2.0 to 2.1). Where did the station pick up listeners to off set drop in the AM?

6 plus numbers don't really mean anything. 18-34, 25-49-54, total persons, male, and female breakdowns would be more relevant.

Radiodream:

Last century, I worked on air in rated markets (#158, #54 and #30) and sales in (#107, #54 and #158) that is why I said "UNSALEABLE"!!! All I want to know what demos and or hours did they pick up in to increase 6+. Revenue wise a drop in morning drive will affect sales commissions negatively. This could be partially off set by maybe 10% to 30% by demo / revenue improvements in other day-parts if the agencies 'like" the demo you increased in. Rumor had it that the old "Regular Guys" had long term contract sponsors that were not concerned with monthly ups and downs in ratings that agencies are. Now with the demise of TRG (and the big payroll) is Cumulus ahead EBITDA profit wise without The Regular Guys?

Remember when the handful of Dave listeners proclaimed that the Game was a failure after just three months? I'd love to get their thoughts on just how much CBS has accomplished with this station in such a short time.

On another note, it really seems like Power is hitting their stride. Hopefully this is the sign of a great CHR ratings battle.

Just out of curiosity, how are the various talk shows doing on 106.7? Some of them are actually growing on me.

You have a point - However, I would like to know the same from folks who said All News would actually do well.

Power 96.1 is doing well? But how is this possible? They are top 40, in Atlanta, and also have an ALL ELECTRONIC DANCE Saturday Night Mix Show, which is even more solid back to back dance music than most top 40 stations in the US. I thought the popular saying was that dance music (as well as top 40) would never work in Atlanta! This anomaly I'm reading about must be some type of internet hoax.

Anyway, congrats to Power.

The light seems to be going out at STAR. It's past time to fill this dark hole with JACK, BOB or whatever you want to call it. This continues to be the top format which is not covered in ATL.

Chuck does a fairly decent job but they could do better, and only a slice of the metro is able to hear them. But, hey don't listen to me. We can always use some more Country and Alternative stations. Atlanta can never get enough of those!

Jack would be nice, but with the dependence of commuters on radio for frequent traffic reports, would the mornings really work revenue wise without a strong Morning show? I have never heard any Jack station with a major morning show. Also 97.1 with its App that lets the audience THINK they have a say in the music would a Jack attitude work? Maybe come kind of hybrid would work. Comedy Mornings and PM drive, then Jack the rest of the day.

Comedy mornings+ Atlanta traffic = Redundancy

I thought All News would work. Then again, I, and more importantly, Cumulus, really underestimated the loyalty of WSB's and, to a lesser extent, WABE's listeners.

I don't know whether all-news would have worked in Atlanta or not, but if it were going to work, it would have required more time and patience. Cumulus ended most of what little promotion it was doing for the station after about six months, which is the same time they added paid programming. A year later, they started adding talk shows. But here's the thing: during the during the one-and-a-half years before the talk shows were added, rating were rising slowly but gradually. Since the change to talk radio, ratings have been stagnant, never rising above the 1.9 and 1.8 it had during the final months before they started adding talk.

I don't think it's the addition of talk but the type (read "quality") of talk that was added.

First, you have Kimmer, a guy who used to have quite a following here, but stayed away long enough to lose it. So, he is trying to create new fans out of a different generation using old stuff. Also, he's up against Limbaugh, who has the ongoing activities of the US President to keep up WSB's ratings.

Then there's Michael Graham, who seemed to be a breath of fresh air, but he is trying to build an audience just as Hummin' Cain is hitting his stride. If he had come on a little sooner, when Cain was still being compared to Boortz, he may have had a chance.

Maybe both would have a chance if the station did any promotion. It's times (ratings) like these that scream for heavy promotion where you have to make listeners feel like they NEED your service. For instance, if you are promoting Kimmer as an alternative to news, you're killing both.

Bottom line: 106.7 provides very good competition - to WGST.
