Atlanta Radio Songs That Make You Cringe

Even the best Atlanta radio stations have those pesky songs...the ones that stick around month after month after month, even though you can't conceive any purpose they can possibly serve for that particular station. This isn't meant to flame any station in specific, just a fun way to vent about the songs that truly make us cringe. This is all my uneducated opinion, I'm sure PDs can simply rebut with callout numbers, but like I said...all in fun.

Here's what we're NOT talking about:

(a) Currents or recent (say, a year old or less) recurrents. While I'd be content not to hear "We Found Love" every time I turn on Q100, it's one of the biggest songs in the country right now and you can bet it won't be in power rotation for more than another month or so.
(b) Songs that have justified spots on a station's playlist, but make you cringe because you simply have a personal dislike for them. I think Hot Chelle Rae's "Tonight Tonight" is one of the worst songs of the decade so far, but a hit's a hit and there's a reason Star and Q100 continue to bang it as a recurrent.

Here's what we ARE talking about:

(a) Songs that have stuck around ENTIRELY too long and have earned a prolonged rest period, or at least to move into a less prominent category.
(b) Songs that stick out like a sore thumb on a respective station (not a hit, doesn't fit the station's overall sound, etc.)

Star 94

- Pink, "Please Don't Leave Me" (I love Pink and this song, but for a nearly three-year-old song, I hear it WAY too frequently. Needs to graduate to a looser recurrent category.)
- Colbie Calliat, "Fallin' For You" (See Pink, although this song's not as good as PDLM. Enough already.)
- Lady Antebellum, "Need You Now" (Again, burned to a crisp. The worst part about these and the last 2 songs is that they always seem to come out of the top-of-hour jingle or a stopset. Talk about a momentum killer.)
- Jordin Sparks, "Battlefield" (This wasn't even that big of a hit. Since Star still plays it heavily, Q100 feels the need to do the same which is even more obnoxious.)
- Katy Perry, "Waking Up In Vegas" (More upbeat than the others, but with all of Katy's hit from her current album, there's no need for this to be rotated so frequently.)

Q100

- John Mayer, "Heartbreak Warfare" (Sounds HORRIBLE on Q100, especially coming out of Rihanna/Katy/etc. Wasn't even a hit to begin, so the only explanation I can surmise is that Jan Jeffries loves this song.)
- Linkin Park, "Somewhere I Belong" (See above, except this literally didn't even make the Top 40 chart. I don't believe for a minute that this calls out.)
- Stereo MC's, "Connected"/Coolio, "Gangsta's Paradise"/Crazy Town, "Butterfly" (All have no relevance in any shape, form or fashion to a CHR format in 2011. Each sound ridiculously dated in their own rights, and even more so next to the aforementioned Rihanna/Katy/Bruno, etc.)
- Shinedown, "Second Chance" (With the glut of rhythmic pop overtaking CHR and the format's resistance to anything remotely HAC/rock-based in nature, I appreciate CHR stations that are trying to balance things out with guitar-driven recurrents. Unfortunately, Q100 tends to substitute the guitar-based songs in place of current material rather than allowing them to complement one another. They need to leave this song to Star.)
- Theory Of A Deadman, "Not Meant To Be" (Again, you are not Star 94, so please move on.)

Dave FM

- Kenny Wayne Shepherd, "Blue On Black" (I just checked Wikipedia to make sure he wasn't married to a Dave FM employee. Their bizarre obsession with this song is obnoxious.)
- The Smiths, "How Soon Is Now"
- Talking Heads, "Once In A Lifetime"
- Indigo Girls, "Closer To Fine" (Yeah, we get it, they're from Atlanta. Does this really need to be your 18th most played song?)

B98.5

- Nena, "99 Red Balloons" (Bizarrely out of place; cheesy and irritating beyond belief.)
- Suzanne Vega, "Tom's Diner" (See above.)
- Miley Cyrus, "Party In The USA" (Ever wonder why no CHRs or Hot ACs play this as a recurrent, much less straight ACs? Hint: it's because no one wants to hear it anymore.)
- Lady GaGa, "Alejandro" ("Oh look, Star's playing this as a recurrent...guess we will too.")

The River

- Supertramp, "Goodbye Stranger"
- Gary Wright, "Dream Weaver"
- Joe Walsh, "Life's Been Good"
- Manfred Mann's Earth Band, "Blinded By The Light"
- Peter Frampton, "Do You Feel Like We Do" (all of these obviously fit the format, but I can't bear to hear them anymore.)

Your turn! What Atlanta radio stations churn out songs that make you go, "What the hell?"

This song is NOT for a mainstream AC station like WSB-FM. I think it's too upbeat for that...it's like playing Justin Bieber's Baby on AC. Give me a break.

Q100 is the worst about this (more so because they also ignore so many current songs).

But, I'm so sick of:

The Script "Breakeven" (this song was as high as 16th place on yes.com just a week ago)!
Kings Of Leon "Use Somebody" (plays about as often)
Jason Mraz "I'm Yours" (even AC stations are over this song)!
....And EVERY SONG IN EXISTENCE BY ONE REPUBLIC is played one by one nearly every hour...(I just don't understand this on a CHR in 2012)!  ::)

"Dream Weaver" was the first one that came to mind when I read the title. I'm glad it was in the OP.

STAR 94
"Heartless" by Kris Allen - wasn't a hit when it came out, still isn't a hit now - completely random song to play
"Secrets" by One Republic - music is boring, lyrics are boring - don't get the appeal at all
"I Want You" by Savage Garden - there's a reason it wasn't replayed in the 2000s - replaying it now is just strange

DAVE-FM
Nothing specific, but they really need to stop playing The Cars - and the obsession with U2, R. E. M., and The Police is pretty crazy

Q100
"Not Meant To Be" by Theory Of A Deadman - completely random song used to "balance" the playlist, and probably the most boring pop/rock song they could possibly pick
"Without You" by David Guetta/Usher and "Stereo Hearts" by Gym Class Heroes - just plain overplayed so much I can't listen to them anymore

99X
"Sail" by Awolnation - sounds like someone vomiting

(Can't believe I didn't think of these before...)

I really wish both STAR 94 and Q100 would stop constantly playing Adam Lambert songs - he is weird, and they are boring - and they are also now two years old

I agree with you TheMusicMan on every one of those Q100 songs... but I'd also like to add:

John Mayer - Daughters (seriously, what CHR plays this song in 2012?)
Vertical Horizon - Everything You Want (this is 2012 not the 1990's)
Train - Drops of Jupiter (NO!)
No Doubt - Spiderwebs (leave it to 99x)
Jason Mraz - I'm Yours (let it die already!!)
TLC songs

and although you mentioned it already, I just have to say it again... Crazytown - Butterfly (WTF)... why?!!??!

Instead they could be playing Breathe Carolina - Blackout, The Wanted - Glad You Came, Gym Class Hereos - Ass Back Home, etc. This is suppose to be Atlanta's hit music station and Cumulus's flagship station... stick with the hits, break new music faster and STOP with the Hot AC recurrents!

I could pick 50 more suitable Hot AC songs for Q100 to play instead of the crap they've been playing for over a year during the day... I can't listen to the station between 10am and 4pm. Sigh :(

The River

- Supertramp, "Goodbye Stranger"
- Gary Wright, "Dream Weaver"
- Joe Walsh, "Life's Been Good"
- Manfred Mann's Earth Band, "Blinded By The Light"
- Peter Frampton, "Do You Feel Like We Do" (all of these obviously fit the format, but I can't bear to hear them anymore.)

Dave: Their obsession with folksy/bluesy cog-rock is why I detest that station. Folk and blues-derived "authentic" songs don't have a lock on good music (unless your name is Jan Wenner). Quit trying to be so "yuppie".

B98.5: "99 Red Balloons" and "Tom's Diner" are right in B98.5's wheelhouse, especially since they are a closet "Point" format station. Whether those are good songs is another question entirely. But they fit the format perfectly.
Miley Cyrus doesn't belong on B98.5, period.

River: "Goodbye Stranger" is about burned out. "Dream Weaver" less so. "Life's Been Good" is a song I never liked; Joe Walsh is one of a handful of musicians who made a career deliberately out of being just not that talented. "Blinded By The Light" is a running joke at River, in terms of a song that gets burned and then burned some more.

River has had "Stairway" on heavy rotation lately. Funny thing is, it's been a long time since anyone has, to the point where it almost sounds fresh. And River needs to ease up on the Heart. At least they have been working lesser-played songs into the mix like "Crazy On You". How about "Dreamboat Annie" or "Even It Up" or "Tell It Like It Is"? They play "Magic Man" about as much as Quixie did back in the day.

Anything by Bruce Hornsby & The Range or John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band gets a button push from me.

One thing I DO like about River is the fact that they don't obsess over Bruce Springsteen. They play a decent amount, but not as much as some stations did back in the day.

One thing I DON'T like about River is their obsession with Zeppelin. They're playing the good stuff and mixing it up, but it seems like every morning the alarm first plays LedZep, snooze, then it's Heart, snooze, and then it's Supertramp (either "The Logical Song" or "Goodbye Stranger"). With Zeppelin, it's an issue of sheer quantity. I don't think there's a Supertramp song that River hasn't burned to a crisp that isn't a complete deep cut.

One song that River has been playing a lot that could get old (hasn't yet) is "Oh Sherrie" by Steve Perry. 96 Rock absolutely incinerated this song when it came out, along with the aforementioned "On The Dark Side" by John Cafferty.

"Rock You Like A Hurricane" by the Scorpions is a good song, but just sounds WEIRD on River and will continue to sound weird unless River adds more harder/newer stuff. It doesn't segue well with their current playlist.

What's up with "Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac? Beautiful song, a great showcase of Stevie Nicks's voice before she threw it out hollering "Rhiannon" on tour, but it never got any ATL airplay until the last few years. Odd for an almost 40 year old song.

Ad all of Queen's songs too.

Listen to Y-106. Every 5th and 6th song is a cringe tune.
I still occasionally call Star "94Q" and Dave "Z93".

AGH is starting to overtest some songs...the playlist seems to have gotten a lot smaller lately. Cringey stuff there:

"For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield: Boomer porn. Not that good of a song to begin with. River plays this one too on occasion and should be ashamed of themselves.
"Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison: The most burned out song of all time.

Let's hope this isn't a prelude to "good times and eight oldies"...

Todd Storz created "Top 40" after observing that people in a local bar seem to play the same songs over and over on the jukebox. After observing the success WNEW/New York was having with music vs. network fare he gave it a shot. The rest is history......KOWH, Omaha became the highest rated independent station in the country and the genesis for music stations as we know them today. And for the most part, human nature has not changed! We still crave the familiar and comfortable.
Today, every major station in America does intensive and extensive research to decide what, when, and where to play music. There are numbers to back up every spin.....you can bet your life on that!
The quality and interpretation of the research is the stumbling block.
For those of us who want new music, or more variety, there is the internet and IPod.
Technology, once again, to the rescue!

As long as Star 94 is beating them in ratings (which they are), Q100 isn't gonna give up the Hot AC recurrents, or break dance/rhythmic-leaning tracks more quickly

Most of your major markets have Hot ACs trailing CHRs by a huge margin - Atlanta is a big exception, so it's a completely different situation than NYC, Philly, LA, DC, Dallas, Boston, etc.

If WPLJ were near the top of the NYC market, trust me, you'd see Z100 add in a lot of Hot AC stuff really quickly

Nobody is asking for personalized playlists... I know that for me, I just wish Q100 would sound like other major market CHR stations... and not play weird recurrents like Crazytown - Butterfly, John Mayer, Stereo MC's - Connected, Vertical Horizon, etc... if they think they are being unique, it is not in a good way.

And I highly doubt removing these songs and replacing them with new music is going to hurt their ratings...

Dreamweaver and Blinded by the Light can go away forever. BUT, NENA's Red Balloons is a keeper. Listen how she pronounces 'troops'.............How can you beat that?.............

Removing those Hot AC recurrents/adding new rhythmic music early would drive more workplace listeners to Star 94 - at least that's how Q100 is thinking about it IMO

My point is SOME of the Hot AC recurrents (which multiple people have listed) are completely out of place... if they want to compete with Star94, why don't they focus on my current Hot AC hits?? There are so many other songs that would make more sense. If their slogan is "All The Hits Q100", then they need to play ALL THE HITS, not just some and then random songs like Crazytown - Butterfly, Linkin Park, Stereo MC's, Coolio, Vertical Horizon, TLC, John Mayer - Daughters and Heartbreak Warfare, etc.

It's so much the Hot AC songs, it's some of their choices...
