Atlanta "Stews" Going National?

I'm surprised this hasn't been brought up here yet, though it was only in the Boston paper this morning:

http://www.boston.com/ae/tv/articles/2005/10/29/wild_to_air_new_african_american_talk_radio_network?mode=PF

Urban radio king Radio One announces a new African-American oriented talk radio network, to launch sometime in early 2006. The star name will be Rev. Al Sharpton (1-4 PM ET).

Quoting:

"Doug and Ryan Stewart, Atlanta-based brothers who also have a sports program on ESPN2 as '2 Live Stews,' are slated to follow Sharpton with a show from 4 to 7 p.m. network-wide."

The article doesn't mention their presence on WQXI/790 locally, or what'll happen to them in the Atlanta market. I don't know for sure, but Radio One's website lists four FM stations in Atlanta and no AMs...would they still air on The Zone? And how would it affect the content of their show?

I have heard Doug and Ryan recently drop things like "Just on Sports Radio 790 the Zone for now" which may indicate something.

I posed the question a while back of how they would treat syndication when it was rumored that they might start appearing on Big League's St Louis station.

To wit: I think they'll handle it fine with some slight adjustments. They have gotten a lot better with the "radio" part of the show and they are the only show on 790 that goes to break on time so I dont think having a syndicated clock will be too hard. As for content, I think they have to stay Atlanta-centric because it is part of the shows appeal (getting Crunk and the like) but they also talk enough general sports to be entertaining especially if the callers are national.

[big "Buck" bopper]doesnt matter. they still suck[/big "Buck" bopper]

Mary Catherine Sneed, COO of Radio One, confirmed with me Sunday that this will be happening but indeed, the 2 Live Stews will remain at the Zone, just doing their show nationally. I'll get more details Monday.

What is amazing is that any of you seem to think that syndication equals talent. Last I checked a lot of crappy shows are on a lot of markets while people with actual talent never gets the chance.

They are horrible on air, they appeal to a segment of audience and that audience will not grow at all unless they move to other markets with that same segment. St Louis is a good fit because it is similar to the segment here in the metro area, try this show in other markets that do not meet that segment and it dies. Good marketing, horrible talent.
______________
I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day

Dude, (Buck)Bopper, chill.....Actually the Stews would have no chance in St. Louis; the average listener there actually wants a born/bred person from that area(its the kinda place where where you went to HS matters)--see that's why B.L. didnt put the Stews out there to begin with (IMHO);
And, deride his on air skills but I'd like to think that Steak (and Andrew) actually do know a bit about programming.

The Stews are ready for whatever; and your opinion that they only appeal to African Americans ITP is laughable. There is a more diverse audience than you think; and some of us even have the Internet and listen on our computers.

Listen Bop, you and Kincade have done a fine job but handing the ball off to Herschel and hostng Thrashers pregame do not the basis of a great Sports Talk show make; you guys spout more BS stats in one segment then the Stews (who botch stats pretty bad
themselves) do in a week.

Pity, really.

Like them or not, they have been a consistent presence in the top five for men since coming on the air in daytime. That is far more than a segment of the audience. That is a large audience. The kind that no sports talk show in Atlanta has ever been able to generate.

They are also the first urban flavored sports talk show in the country to have any success, so the fact that syndicators are sniffing around is no surprise.

You have to credit the 790 brass. They had the same numbers as Buck and Kincaid in the afternoon (usually slightly better) for years and never settled to believe that was good enough. They kept making changes until they found something that worked. B&K is the show that appeals to a small segment of the audience and they have years of ratings data to prove it.
