Atlanta Traffic Reporters

I know WSB uses Metro/Total for some of their traffic reporters. And All News 106.7 uses in-house Radiate Media...correct?

A lot of familiar names are on AN106.7 traffic like Kevin O'Brien, Bill Cellar, Matt Hoffberg, Jill Nelson, Greg Talmage and Kristin Charles. They also have Ty Hunter on airborne command duties.

WSB of course has stalwarts Cap'n Herb and Mark Arum.

My question...knowing All News owns an airplane (or maybe they own it through Radiate), do any of their employees actually work for them? I'm just curious.

All News 106.7 does say "Airborne Traffic," but I'm not so sure that means they own a plane. I'm thinking they probably don't.

Radiate is not an in-house Cumulus service. It's an separate firm used by TV and radio stations around the country, including (I think) Fox 5 and CBS 46 in this market. I believe Radiate is owned by a company called Navigate Media. Radiate has been called a number of things over the years, including Traffic.com. Cumulus signed a big deal with Radiate about a year ago.

If I am not mistaken, Cumulus is invested in Radiate. That is fuzzy memory. I have been told that AN106.7 does use a plane, but if it is like most stations/traffic organizations, it is contracted from the plane owner.

I wish we could bring back Keith Kalland (RIP). Best traffic reporter evAR.

All Access: Cumulus Media And Radiate Media Launching Nationwide Radio Traffic Reporting Service
http://www.allaccess.com/net-news/archive/story/103149/cumulus-media-and-radiate-media-launching-nationwi

"We're excited about launching RIGHT NOW TRAFFIC with RADIATE MEDIA. Americans are spending more than 1,000 hours per year in their cars. Our listeners, advertisers and network affiliates all demand accurate and timely traffic information, and this partnership enables us to address that need with a best in class service," said CUMULUS CEO LEW DICKEY.

"At RADIATE we pride ourselves on supplying the most up-to-date and timely traffic reporting available to the people who need it," said RADIATE CEO CHRIS ROTHEY. "The CUMULUS network has an amazing reach, and we look forward to working closely with them to localize traffic reporting and enhance the way people access information for their daily lives."

Cumulus is a joint partner with Radiate Media . . . and I have a hard time believing Kristen Charles was switched to the Radiate payroll when she was already at 106.7 WYAY doing mid-days. Same for Fred McFarlin and Susan Carr.

It really does not matter in the great scheme of things. Radiate is operating a few markets out of the Cumulus studios is really all the is pertinent to this conversation. In reality the AN106.7 traffic people sit in the studio next to the anchors and operate as if they are part of the AN106.7 crew. Is Radiate feeding traffic to the other Atlanta Cumulus cluster stations?

I don't know...traffic reporting has always been an interest of mine.

If a station is using the "RIGHT NOW Traffic" banner for their reports (and all Cumulus stations in the top 75 markets are) then it is a Radiate/Cumulus product.

I realize that I am not a radio pro like most of the users on this board, but I don't understand (literally and figuratively) Capt. Herb. He sounds just like Boomhauer from King of the Hill. I'm not originally from Atlanta, so perhaps unintelligable mumbling the way native Atlantan's speak?

I have no problem understanding Cap'n Herb and he's very familiar with our roads.

However, we have already seen the best traffic reporter in Atlanta come and go. Keith Kalland spoke very clearly, was entertaining yet on point and knew every alternate route for every major road within 25 miles of Downtown Atlanta. Loved his reporting and I understand he was absolutely first class and a nice guy to boot.

Speaking of traffic reporters, what ever happened to Art Mehring?

Yes Keith Kalland was a class act,he started the miracle league in Conyers,so handicap kids could play baseball,I wish Jim Van would come back. Art "Mad Man" Mearing is still with CC,he also does traffic 92.5 The Bear in Grffin.

There was a rumor spreading over at the CNN offices that Jim was being hired by All News to anchor traffic in the afternoons- but Kristen Charles stayed on from her 106.7 WYAY DJ duties...so that fell through.

Also...Art "Mad Man" Mehring. Not to be confused with his all things Cox Radio-loving impersonator, "artiemad."

They could have used him as a weekend/fill in,or WSB should call him up,after he was let go from Kicks he did Tomahawk Traffic for 96.1/WGST when they had the Braves.

I rather enjoyed Art "Mad Man" Mehring's reporting. carbeques, 3 car insurance seminars and belly-rubs on GA-400 are all fun and add a little entertainment to the morning drive. I just don't listen to any CC stations anymore.

Speaking of, does anyone have any airchecks of Keith's reports from years past?

Don't forget "RPH" Residual Pinhead Slowing. ;D
