Atlanta trends

Looking at today's trends...it looks like the move to change WKLS wasn't such a bad one...I don't have dayparts.

It also appears to be driving 99x right into the crapper.

Still early, though and I'm just looking at 12+.

Where did all the Kicks listeners go? They lost almost a whole share in this trend.
Grant it, you can't really judge from a trend but at least it's interesting. The "River" continues to pick up the Classic Rock crowd. And so much for the "Bull" making an impact. Why even blow up Lite Fm? Cox must be thanking CC on a daily basis.

I interpret the numbers differently than you do. Clear Channel gave a nice gift to B98.5 by blowing up Lite FM. The Bull replaced most of the former Lite listeners who moved to B98.5 with country listeners, who came from Kicks.

But...the only thing this shows is that country listeners were sampling The Bull, probably seeing the tremendous amount of TV advertising. So this means little at this point, and yes, it's only a trend. How things shake out long term in the country battle won't be known for awhile.

As always Roddy, you make great points but do you really think "Kicks" diehards are jumping ship? They do a WAY better job at bringing the Country product to the people than the "Bull." My point is was it worth blowing up "Lite" from a financial angle? Is the "Bull" bringing in more revenue than "Lite?" I don't see the "Bull" making a ratings impact....ever.

I didn't say they were jumping ship. I said they were sampling The Bull. I personally think Kicks is the better station at this point, but we're not really going to get the true audience picture for awhile, probably at least until the fall book comes out (in my opinion).

Forget the trends. They mean nothing. WKLS revenue is still down about 65% from their heyday of a just a few years ago. 99X still has healthier billing than any two Clear Channel stations combined.

And CC also gave a gift to the River as well by blowing up 96 Rock. 4 out of the Top 5 slots belong to Cox (The Beat being the only one not).

Remember, this trend still includes December (Dec, Jan, Feb), so the BULL is still getting numbers from WLTM.

Let's see what happens when the book comes out and they lose those numbers.

True on the december number still being there, but they had a respectable extrap for the month. But then they should have. They spent over $1M to relaunch, fair to say the country cume has come to try them out. What they do with it long term differently than whats found on KICKS,Y, TSH, and NCG remains the point. It will not be a 10 share country market. River opened in jan 7 range 25-54 lasy year and followed with high 6's. By year end they were nearer 4's in the last 3 months. What does that say for Bull potential when they roll out high 1 and mid 2's?

To me, all they did is shove two more Cox stations in the top 5, River and SBF. Nice job.

Give it at least another 6 months to "shake out"...

It is just a trend. Add in the factor of "Braves on the Bull" and there's a whole new story.

...and what new story would that be? Braves on 96Rock was far from overwhelming. Baseball cume, unrecycled, is worthless, unless your buying baseball.

What's the deal with Star 94? Looks like they've been going down the crapper as of late, but I don't think they'll be going to radio heaven anytime soon. And speaking of Star, what's the latest S&V rumor? Haven't read one in a while.

I dont think can judge much of anybody until the market settles from the CC bonehead moves of late. Everyone is in transit until they find something that suites them with the death of LTM and 96Rock and the sampling thats assiciated with all of it. It still blows me away that they just deferred these positions to Cox.

good call. I dont personally buy conspiracy knowing there is not much love between the two in Atlanta, but just the same pretty much on target. To me, a continued lack of focus on Atlanta, and hard to impagine noone thought of the implications, short and long term, on these moves. Whatever the degree of success with these changes, they will be competeting in the lower tier of Atlanta radio now that they have diluted ABC country and fortified Cox in power positions. No math makes that right.

The help CC's moves gave to Cox was quite a topic of discussion last December when all this was happening.

I'm guessing CC realized what it was doing for Cox. But based on what I was told by various sales managers and sales people, my take was that the format changes happened almost out of panic. While billings were up about 15% in 2006 over 2005, they were still something like $20 million below 2004. The Atlanta cluster has been a sore spot for CC corporate, probably in part because John Hogan rose through the ranks here.

When CC brought Deskins in, corporate was basically saying, "I don't care what we have to do, but we're going to make Atlanta work." Apparently CC perceived the billings ceiling on Lite FM to be lower than they needed to "make Atlanta work." They considered Kicks' perennial place in the top tier of billings (and ratings) and decided 94.9 had more potential there. Everyone knew 96 Rock needed to go more current, but I think CC's absolute obsession with increasing billings drove them to make a more drastic change, rational or not.

How can the market settle when there's another bonehead move always on the horizon?
