Atlanta TV station outsourcing sports

I just read on Radio-Info that WGCL TV in Atlanta is doing away with their sports department and outsourcing the sports to 790 The Zone. All sports on the TV station will now be done by the anchors from the radio station.

I post this because I wonder how long before someone in New York, Ch 5, Ch 9, Ch 11, even one of the network stations, does this. Dump the sports guys and have the guys from either 1050 ESPN or The Fan do the sports.

The station's news director uses the analogy of how ABC Sports uses ESPN. He also goes on to say that in this day and age of Blackberry use, Internet and iPhone sports reports, nobody is staying up until 11:23 to see how their teams did.

Now we all know that a few of our sports anchors have already been dropped, including the latest Len Berman. Channel 7 doesn't even do any sports reporting during their 5 PM cast. And during the 6 PM cast, Scott Clark gets maybe four or five minutes at around 6:23.

Have TV sports casts gone the way of the dinosaur? Is someone in this market about to do what has been done in Atlanta? Stay tuned.

Well, it kind of makes sense to use resources that are at your disposal. With networks like CBS & ABC, you have brand recogition with their respective sport radio brands, so I can see why they would do it.

WGCL is an underperforming station. In their case, such a move makes sense. It's not unheard of for a major market TV station to make such a move. Detroit's WWJ doesn't even have a news department. In fact, their motto is "no news is good news."
