ATL's Certified Meterologist

Ok, so everyone knows Dagmar Midcap over at CBS Atlanta isn't a certified meterologist and its obvious too. Now, the talk is 11 Alive's Paul Ossman isn't certified neither. Channel 2 Action New sure isn't taking it lightly. I just seen a commercial on Channel 2 mentioning what does it mean to be a certfied meterologist. Of course all the praise went to Glenn Burns and his experience, but I thought that commercial was so funny, especially since I know Dagmar Midcap is a joke and now Paul Ossman with no certfication. What TV market numebr are we in?

Paul Ossmann is certified...he has an NWA certification. There are different types of certifications.

What WSB-TV is refering to is the new AMS CBM certification, which has tougher standards than the older AMS certification (which is being slowly phased out in favor of the CBM). Some meterologists (or weatherpeople) don't want to have to deal with the advanced math involved in the CBM certification, and are either letting their certifications lapse, or going with NWA.

Paul Ossmann is certainly qualified to do what he does (give weather forecasts on air). He probably doesn't like the title "meterologist", because he is not a research scientist...which is who a meterologist really is (although is quite obsessed with the weather...complete with a weatherradio in his car and an NWS neighborhood weather station in his backyard).

Most weather people on TV are given the "metorologist" title because it gives the station more credibility. True meterologists more than likely work for the Government (National Weather Service) or in academia conducting scientific research (although many...like Ken Cook...crossed over in broadcast TV, where I am sure the pay is much better). The Mississippi State program is designed for people to learn how to present the weather on TV, not be true weather researchers, which is what the term "meterologist" applies.

Keep in mind...whether you are Ken Cook or Dagmar Midcap...the NWS and the world's largest supercomputer have done your work for you. All you do is put together the graphics (If you have meterological training...take a look over it and put common sense to it), stand in front of a chroma key or video wall and give the forecast.
