ATSC 3.0 STB

Antenna Man recently had a review of the Zapperbox tuner here:

It sounds like a good idea, but it runs $275 on Amazon. I'd like to get one but the price is going to have to come down and more stations in my area are going to have to have ATSC 3.0 signals before I get one.

Doesn't ATSC 3.0 give broadcasters the means to put more content behind paywalls? If so, there should be no rush to see it catch on since that would defeat the main benefit of OTA TV, at least for viewers.

Company called Evoca tried that in the NW. Lasted about 5 years. They shuttered in January 1st.

My GE STB would work with a smart antenna, but I never got one.

I was wondering if the diversity FM receiver (multi antenna) concept could be applied to ATSC 1.0 reception - more than one outdoor antenna with an ATSC 1.0 receiver that continuously evaluates the signal quality from each antenna and uses the one (moment to moment) with the least multipath interference.

I tend to buy gadgets when they get down to about $100 to $150 (RCA CED videodisc players, HD-DVD players, USDTV ATSC 1.0 open box STB etc.), I'll probably get one of these ATSC 3.0 STBs and use an HDMI -> AV converter so I can make VHS recordings of ATSC 3.0 content.

Well...why wait...I just ordered one (~$88 total), now I can begin saving for an ATSC 4.0 (or 5.0?) STB.

Now I can compare ATSC 1.0 and ATSC 3.0 reception during windy weather (which blows the branches of a backyard tree around and causes multipath).

Does this have recording capability like ATSC 1.0 boxes? There is only one low power ATSC 3.0 station in my area for now but this may be worth getting now.

I use VHS HiFi VCRs that I bought from thrift shops (and I bought a bunch of T-120 & T-160 blank tapes several years ago) along with 2 Zenith (ATSC 1.0) STBs (using a flat antenna taped to the inside of a basement window with one and a UHF loop antenna outside with the other) - one is connected to the video + stereo audio input and the other to the RF input of the VCR.

I'll probably get a line level switch for the video + stereo audio VCR input so I can easily compare reception of ATSC 1.0 and ATSC 3.0 via this new STB.

I haven't investigated the PC/computer based A/V home recording systems.

I'd like to find one of those boxes that don't require WiFi or the net, but even ones coming soon require those. Would like a simple box to pull stuff off the air into the TV.
