Attention Chief Engineers

Seton Hall University, the oldest and one of the largest Diocesan Universities in the nation, currently has a position available for a:
CHIEF ENGINEER
WSOU-FM and Pirate TV
Under the supervision of the WSOU General Manager, the Chief Engineer provides engineering and technical services and maintains, inspects, and repairs all studio and broadcasting equipment for WSOU-FM and Pirate TV, the student-run campus TV station. Candidate will specify and/or design and install new equipment as necessary and maintain equipment service records, logs, and reports as required by the FCC, state and local agencies, and Seton Hall University to ensure that licensing, operations and technical performance are met. The selected individual also assists with program production, scheduling, editing, and technical advice and provides 24-hour, 7 day a week on-call coverage.
A Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of responsibility for all engineering aspects of a broadcast or cable station or similar facility required. Must possess knowledge of professional radio broadcast and TV/video equipment, including technical proficiency in audio and video recording, editing, mixing and dubbing. Candidate should also be knowledgeable in FCC rules and regulations, proficient in Prophet operating systems, and have strong knowledge of digital and analog communication systems, equipment and techniques. SBE certification, experience working with students, above average computer and networking skills, and experience overseeing the construction of radio/TV facilities preferred. The ability to lift up to 100 pounds a must. Applicants must possess an understanding of and willingness to support the Seton Hall University Catholic Mission.

I Guess that keeps me out of trying for the job.#1 is the killer part for me.

1). I broke my neck 10 years ago cannot do ANY heavy lifting over 50Lbs...
2). Im not Catholic. willingness to support the "" "" Catholic Mission ... seems like a biased request to me.
I once applied for the Engineering job at the Dioces of Rockville Center,In NY
for their TV network(over 20 years ago). A few years later I found out through the grapevine,
which I cannot prove was they gave the job to a Less qualified guy,and not me because I was a non-christian. Wow if I could only have proven that. Its water under the bridge. Best of luck to whomever takes the job.

How exactly, as chief engineer, would one ever "support the Seton Hall University Catholic Mission?"

Are ya even allowed to say something like that in a job posting? "Support the Seton Hall University mission" maybe...but when you add "Catholic," aren't you kinda walking on water--err, I mean into a rather gray area?

I doubt there are too many people on this forum who
would not be able to sign onto this mission, whether
you are a Catholic or any other religion.

While I don't support discrimination, I do recognize
that there are circumstances where it is appropriate.
It will be a long time before there are male attendants
in the women's locker room. (But who knows. The PC
crowd might work on that issue at some time too.)
And if a comprehensive understanding of the Catholic
faith is required for a position, then rejecting someone
who doesn't have it is appropriate.

I don't know if you weren't selected for that job in
New York because of your religion. I don't know if you
can say for sure. If religion did play a role it makes
a statement about the tolerance, or lack thereof, of
those who decided to hire someone else.

Seton Hall is a very open school and has welcomed
students and employees of every religion. You would
be hard-pressed to find any discrimination at that
school. I don't know the statistics today, but at
one time 25 percent of department chairmen/women at
the school were Jews.

Anyone interested in that Seton Hall job shouldn't
be dissuaded from applying if they are not Catholic.
It wouldn't make a difference to those who are
looking for a solid performer with the experience
and skills needed for the job.

There was actually a similar case heard in court a few years back. It involved KFUO-AM/FM in St. Louis, which belongs to the Lutheran Church. The station somehow expected religious qualifications from applicants for a certain job; an applicant who couldn't meet those qualifications sued, claiming discrimination.

At that point my memory runs out...

I *believe* I recall properly the job was as an announcer on KFUO-FM, which is operated as a secular classical music station. And that the court ruled that religious qualifications could only be required for jobs for which they were relevant - for example, program director of Christian spoken-word KFUO-AM. (so, you could not be required to be a Christian to hold a job in Engineering) Please don't hold me to that recollection though.
